Chapter 2 - The BOLO at the Gates

The early morning fog hung heavy over the sprawling lawns of the Beverly Hills estate as Daniel’s black SUV pulled through the wrought-iron gates. Two police cruisers were parked haphazardly across the cobblestone courtyard, their red and blue emergency lights painting the white neo-classical pillars in flashing washes of color.

As Daniel stepped out of the vehicle, Detective Marcus Vance—a sharp-eyed investigator with the LAPD Major Crimes Division—intercepted him on the front steps.

“Mr. Whitmore,” Vance said, flashing a badge before sliding it back into his trench coat pocket. “Glad you made it back. We’ve been trying to reach your cell.”

“My phone was in my jacket at the hospital,” Daniel said, his voice flat, controlled. He gestured to the police cruisers. “Care to explain why my home looks like a crime scene?”

“Because it is one,” Vance replied dryly, gesturing for Daniel to follow him through the front doors.

The foyer was eerily quiet. The shattered remnants of his grandmother’s antique mirror had been swept up into clear plastic evidence bags by forensics technicians, but a dark stain of dried blood still clung stubbornly to the grain of the hardwood floor.

“We executed a search warrant on the master wing about an hour ago,” Detective Vance said as they walked down the east corridor. “Specifically, your fiancée’s private dressing room and safe.”

Daniel’s stomach tightened. “And what did you find?”

“We found two passports under different aliases. We found thirty thousand dollars in untraceable bearer bonds. And we found a series of encrypted communication logs routing directly through a shell corporation called Vanguard Holdings.”

Daniel stopped dead in his tracks. Vanguard Holdings. The exact same corporate entity that had popped up during the corporate restructuring audits six months ago—audits that Vanessa had personally managed while claiming it was routine tax optimization.

“Vanguard is a Whitmore subsidiary,” Daniel said defensively.

“Not anymore,” Vance corrected him, pulling a folded legal document from his coat. “Six months ago, ownership of Vanguard was transferred via a general power of attorney bearing your signature. It drained nearly twelve million dollars in liquid capital out of your primary holdings and funneled it into an international trust.”

Daniel stared at the paper. His signature. Smooth, flawless, and completely forged.

“I never signed that,” Daniel whispered.

“Well, someone did,” Vance said. “And according to our digital forensics team, the master access key for that corporate transfer wasn't sent from your office computer. It was routed from an IP address registered in a residential neighborhood in East Los Angeles.”

East Los Angeles.

The exact neighborhood where Maria’s seven-year-old son, Noah, was currently staying.

Daniel’s blood turned to ice. Vanessa hadn't just attacked Maria over a spilled secret. She had gone to Maria’s home tonight—or sent someone—to find the physical encryption keys that tied her, and Andrew, to the stolen millions.

“Where is Vanessa now?” Daniel demanded.

Vance’s expression darkened. “She wasn't in the master suite when the team breached. Her car is still in the garage, and her designer gown was tossed in the master closet. But she’s gone.”

Before Detective Vance could say another word, his radio crackled to life with a burst of static and a frantic voice.

“Dispatch to Detective Vance. We’ve got an urgent 10-41 at the East L.A. address on Euclid Avenue. House fire reported. Potential child hostage situation.”
