Chapter 1 - The Sound of Closing Doors

The Manhattan wind hit Evelyn the moment she stepped out from under the glass canopy of the Bellamy Grand, biting straight through her wool coat. She didn't call a car. She didn't check her phone. She walked three blocks uptown before her boots began to ache against the pavement, her mind replaying that single image like a scratched record skipping in an endless loop: the white shirt, the embroidered DV initials, the damp ends of hair, the complete, casual ownership with which another woman walked out of her husband's private suite.
Her hand remained buried deep in her coat pocket, pressing the folded piece of thermal paper against her thigh. The twelve-week ultrasound photograph—a ghostly, gray-scale shadow of a heart beating where no one else knew it existed—felt suddenly absurd. A secret life tucked away in a pocket while the real life, the messy, rotting truth of her marriage, sprawled across an expensive hotel floor forty-two floors above.
By the time she reached their penthouse, the foyer was dead silent. The climate control hummed its familiar, sterile tune. The single coffee cup from her morning routine was still sitting precisely where she had left it on the edge of the twelve-seat dining table, untouched and cold.
Evelyn walked into the master bedroom, shrugged out of her coat, and laid the ultrasound photograph flat on the mahogany nightstand.
She didn't cry. The shock had frozen into something much heavier, a dense, unyielding weight settling in her chest. She had spent four years convincing herself that Dominic’s emotional absence was just the cost of ambition, that his long hours and distant stares were the currency of success. But this wasn't absence. This was presence, delivered to someone else.
Her phone buzzed on the nightstand. The screen lit up with his name: Dominic.

She stared at it as it vibrated against the wood, the rhythmic hum sounding less like a call and more like a warning pulse. She let it ring out. Then it buzzed again. And a third time.
