Chapter 3 - The Fractured Alibi

For three seconds, the only sound in the penthouse was the distant wail of a police siren drifting up from the street.

Dominic’s mouth opened slightly, then closed. The smooth, untouchable corporate titan vanished, replaced by a man frantically rifling through a mental Rolodex for an excuse that didn't exist.

"Evelyn," he began, his voice dropping an octave, losing its professional polish and turning rough at the edges. "Let's... let's talk about this. That wasn't—it wasn't what it looks like."

"Tell me what it looks like, Dominic," Evelyn said, taking a deliberate step forward. "Because to me, it looked like a woman walking out of your private suite in your shirt. Your favorite shirt. The one with the embroidered initials."

Dominic took a half-step back, his shoulders slumping. The defiance dissolved into an ugly, cornered desperation. "She’s a consultant. Elena works with the acquisitions team. She spilled coffee on her blouse during a morning walkthrough, and—and I lent her a spare shirt from my office wardrobe."

The lie was so pathetic, so structurally weak, that Evelyn almost laughed.

"A spare shirt," Evelyn repeated, her voice dripping with a cold, razor-sharp irony. "With your initials on the cuff? And she just happened to be wearing it at noon after leaving your private residential suite with damp hair?"

Dominic stared at her, realizing the trap was absolute. He dragged a hand over his face, his composure fracturing completely. "Look, Evelyn, my life is under an incredible amount of pressure right now. The merger with Vanguard is entering its final phase. The board is breathing down my neck. Things get... blurred. It doesn't mean anything. It has nothing to do with us."

"Us," Evelyn said, tasting the word like poison on her tongue. "What 'us,' Dominic? You haven't looked at me in three years unless there was a charity gala or a tax filing requiring both our signatures."

She turned away from him, walking over to the nightstand. Her hand hovered over the folded piece of thermal paper resting beside his lamp. For a second, she considered handing it to him—letting him see the fragile, beating heart she had carried into the city that morning, just to watch him realize what he had thrown away.

Instead, she picked it up and slid it back into her pocket.

"Where are you going?" Dominic asked, his voice sharpening with sudden alarm as he saw her body language shift.

"I'm going to spend the night somewhere else," Evelyn said, walking past him toward the closet to grab a small overnight bag.
