Chapter 5 - The Stranger in the Lobby

The elevator doors slid open instantly, as if the machine itself wanted her gone. Evelyn stepped inside, pressed the lobby button, and watched Dominic’s face recede behind the closing stainless steel doors.

Her hands were shaking now—not from sadness, but from an overwhelming surge of adrenaline. The air inside the small car felt thick, suffocating. She rested her forehead against the cool mirrored wall, closing her eyes as the digital floor numbers ticked downward: 35, 28, 19, 10...

When the elevator chimed at the ground floor, the doors slid open to reveal the cavernous, dimly lit luxury of the Bellamy Grand lobby. Polished marble floors reflected the amber glow of designer chandeliers. A few guests sat in velvet armchairs near the concierge desk, speaking in hushed, polite tones.

Evelyn kept her head down, walking briskly toward the revolving glass exit.

"Evelyn?"

The voice was low, smooth, and entirely unexpected.

Evelyn stopped dead in her tracks. She turned slowly around.

Standing near one of the marble pillars, holding a crystal tumbler of scotch, was a man in his late forties with sharp, intelligent eyes and a tailored charcoal suit that fit with effortless perfection. It was Julian Rhodes.

Evelyn stared at him, her heart skipping a beat. She had met Julian twice at high-level corporate functions—he was the ruthless venture capitalist who owned a controlling stake in several major competitor firms, a man known in New York financial circles as a corporate predator who never made a move without an angle.

"Mr. Rhodes," Evelyn said, her voice tight with caution. "What are you doing here?"

Julian took a slow sip of his drink, his eyes scanning her face with a terrifyingly clinical precision—taking in her packed overnight bag, her pale skin, and the raw, unmasked tension in her posture.

"I was having a drink upstairs," Julian said smoothly, stepping closer with a faint, enigmatic smile. "And I happened to see my dear friend and business associate, Dominic Marlo, looking like he had just been executed on the thirty-eighth floor. Tell me, Mrs. Marlo... are you planning to destroy him legally, or would you like some professional assistance?"
