Chapter 4 - The Ultimatum

"You can't just walk out," Dominic said, stepping into her path, his corporate authority flaring up like a dying ember trying to catch dry wood. "We have a public image to maintain, Evelyn. The Vanguard merger closes next month. If you pull a stunt like walking out now, the board will question my stability. It could tank the entire deal."
Evelyn stopped packing, holding a dark sweater in her hands. She looked up at him, her eyes cold enough to freeze water.
"You care more about a corporate merger than the fact that your marriage is burning to the ground?" she asked, though she already knew the answer.
"It's not just a merger," Dominic hissed, losing his temper entirely, his mask of calm completely shattered. "It's twenty million dollars in equity and my position as CEO. If you blow this up over a momentary lapse in judgment—over a mistake—you'll destroy everything we've built!"
"You built it, Dominic," Evelyn corrected him quietly. "I just decorated the cage."
She zipped her bag shut, hoisted it by the handle, and walked straight past him toward the double doors of the master suite.
"Evelyn, stop!" Dominic shouted, reaching out to grab her arm.
She jerked her arm away from his grip with a sharp, violent motion, stepping back into the hallway. "Don't touch me. If you follow me, if you call me, if you send a single driver or assistant to look for me, I won't just walk out for the night. I will hand every single financial record, text message, and hotel receipt I’ve quietly archived over the last two years directly to Arthur Vance and the board ethics committee."
Dominic froze in the doorway, his eyes widening in pure horror. He knew she wasn't bluffing. For all his brilliance in the boardroom, he had entirely underestimated the quiet, observant woman who sat at the end of his twelve-seat table every morning.

Without another word, Evelyn turned her back on him, walked down the long hallway, and pressed the elevator call button.
