Chapter 2 - The Art of the Alibi

The phone stopped vibrating, leaving behind a silence so heavy it felt tangible. Evelyn walked to the floor-to-ceiling windows, watching the headlights streak along the avenue far below.
Twenty minutes later, the private entry door clicked open.
Dominic’s footsteps echoed across the parquet floor of the foyer—quick, purposeful, carrying that familiar cadence of a man used to managing rooms the moment he entered them. He dropped his leather briefcase onto the console table with a dull thud.
"Evelyn?" he called out, his voice echoing slightly in the vast, high-ceilinged space. "Are you home? Your phone was going straight to voicemail."
Evelyn didn't move from the window. She kept her back to the room, her reflection faintly ghosting over the glass against the backdrop of the city lights.
Dominic appeared in the doorway of the master suite, loosening his silk tie as he walked. He looked immaculate, as he always did—hair neatly styled, skin smelling faintly of sandalwood and expensive cologne. But there was a slight tension around his eyes, a microscopic twitch of caution that only someone who had studied him for a decade would ever notice.
"You missed our appointment," Dominic said, stepping further into the room. He walked toward her, his tone adopting that smooth, frictionless charm he used on board members and nervous clients. "I cleared my schedule for the afternoon, expecting you at the clinic. Is everything alright?"
Evelyn slowly turned around to face him. She folded her arms across her chest, her expression entirely neutral.
"I didn't go to the clinic, Dominic," she said softly.
Dominic stopped three feet away, his hand lingering on his collar. A flicker of something crossed his face—not guilt, not yet, but calculation. "Why not? You said the twelve-week check was today. I wanted to be there."
"Did you?" Evelyn asked. Her voice didn't shake. It was terrifyingly steady. "That's strange, because it seemed like you had a very busy afternoon already."
Dominic’s brow furrowed, the charm tightening into a mask of polite confusion. "What are you talking about?"
"The Bellamy Grand," Evelyn said, watching his eyes for the exact microsecond the floor dropped out from under him. "Thirty-eighth floor. Private suite. Beautiful view of the skyline."

The color drained from Dominic's face so fast it looked theatrical. His hand dropped entirely from his neck.
