Chapter 21 - The Conspiracy in the Boardroom

While the high-rise offices of Aethelgard operated with clinical precision, the darker undercurrents of corporate Manhattan were stirring. Deep within the glass-and-steel monolith of Vanguard Capital—a predatory private equity firm that had long envied Aethelgard’s rapid expansion—a clandestine meeting was underway.

In a windowless conference room shrouded in cigar smoke, three men sat around a sleek black glass table. At the center was Julian Thorne, a ruthless corporate raider who had made a fortune by picking the bones of bankrupt real estate portfolios. Across from him sat Marcus Thorne, his chief legal strategist, and Viktor Vance, a disgruntled distant cousin of Claire’s who had been systematically cut out of the family trust years prior.

"Aethelgard is expanding too fast," Julian muttered, flicking an ash into a crystal tray. "If they lock down the Tri-State distribution routes permanently, our commercial holdings in Queens and Brooklyn will be completely choked out. We need a wedge."

Viktor leaned forward, his eyes gleaming with bitter resentment. "Claire is untouchable as long as the Sterling-Vance trust backs her liquidity. But her empire has a blind spot—her philanthropic investments. She’s poured millions into community trusts that lack traditional corporate audit shields."

"Explain," Julian commanded, leaning back.

"The Greenwich community land grants," Viktor smiled thinly. "When Claire restructured the old Whitmore estate assets into the foundation, a small parcel of commercial frontage was inadvertently misclassified under an old municipal zoning loophole. If we acquire the underlying debt notes through a secondary offshore vehicle, we can slap an injunction on the entire foundation rollout just as they break ground on the new children's clinic."

Julian grinned, a predatory expression that mirrored the corporate warfare Grant Whitmore had once waged. "Do it. Let’s see how invincible our dear Claire is when her precious charity is dragged through a public scandal."
