Chapter 29 - The Shadow of the Past

Deep within a dimly lit executive suite in Zurich, far away from the reach of the New York financial district, Viktor Vance stared furiously at a glowing laptop screen. The headlines across financial news sites blared the downfall of Vanguard Capital and the unstoppable rise of the Vance-Aethelgard Foundation.
"She ruined everything," Viktor muttered, slamming his fist onto the mahogany desk. His face was pale, his eyes hollowed by paranoia and bourbon.
He had spent years plotting to fracture the Sterling-Vance trust, believing that Claire’s sudden independence was a temporary aberration. Instead, her alliance with Arthur Sterling and the unexpected legal intervention of Grant Whitmore had systematically destroyed every leverage point he possessed.
"Don't underestimate her, Viktor," a cold, clipped voice echoed from the shadows near the balcony.
A man stepped forward into the dim light—Marcus Thorne, Julian’s disgraced former chief legal strategist, who had managed to slip out of the United States before the SEC dragnet closed.
"Vanguard is gone, and our offshore accounts are frozen," Viktor hissed. "Aethelgard controls the entire Tri-State commercial corridor. We have nothing left to fight them with."
"Not directly, no," Marcus smiled thinly, a dangerous gleam in his eyes. "Direct corporate warfare is off the table. But empires aren't just built on balance sheets, Viktor. They're built on relationships. And everyone has an unfinished chapter in their past."

Viktor narrowed his eyes. "What are you suggesting?"
"Grant Whitmore," Marcus said smoothly. "He’s still sitting in an upstate federal cell, quietly rewriting the rules of corporate litigation from the inside. He lost everything because of Claire Vance and Arthur Sterling. Men like Grant don't forget who handed them the hammer."
