Chapter 34 - The Night of the Spark

The alarm klaxon tore through the silence of the federal facility at 2:15 AM, its pulsing red strobe lights washing the cinderblock corridors in an ominous, rhythmic glare.

Inside Cell 412, Grant was awake instantly. He hadn't been sleeping deeply; his instincts had been on high alert all evening. Across the block, shouting echoed off the steel doors, accompanied by the heavy metallic thud of boots running down the concrete tier.

"B-Tier is breaching!" an inmate's voice screamed from down the corridor, followed by the shattering of glass and the distinct pop of tear gas canisters discharging in the central mess hall.

The coordinated riot engineered by Marcus Thorne and Viktor Vance had detonated precisely on schedule. The newly transferred syndicate inmates, fueled by smuggled contraband and outside incitement, had smashed through the recreation gate, overwhelming the skeleton night shift security detail and seizing control of the main utility corridor.

Inmates flooded the central tier, shouting and smashing security cameras.

Marcus rushed to Grant’s cell door as the manual override alarms flashed yellow. "Counselor, the lockdown doors on tier three are failing! They're heading this way!"

Grant looked around his tiny, immaculate cell. His legal briefs, Henderson's completed appellate petition, and the small framed photograph of young Claire Jr. tucked safely inside his locker. He reached into his shirt pocket and felt the crisp edges of C.’s faded diner napkin letter: Everyone hits the floor eventually—what matters is how you build the room when you stand back up.

"They aren't here for the files, Marcus," Grant said, his voice calm, resolute, and completely devoid of panic. "They're here to burn the records and discredit the clinic so the courts shut us down permanently."

"We have to get to the warden's security station!" Marcus urged.

"No," Grant replied, stepping firmly out into the chaotic corridor as the smoke began to billow up from the lower tiers. "We protect the case files. Every single man's appeal on this tier represents a life trying to climb out of the dark. We hold the library."
