Chapter 6 - The New Flag

The glowing corporate banner rippled gently in the salty ocean wind across the massive boardroom projector screen, its bold, unfamiliar lettering burning into Grant Whitmore’s retinas.

Aethelgard Holdings.

It wasn't just a rebrand. It was a complete corporate annexation.

Grant stood frozen in the center of the darkened forty-fifth-floor executive boardroom, his breathing ragged in the dead silence of the morning. On the live satellite feed, Claire turned her head slightly toward the camera, her expression calm, serene, and entirely detached from the man who had once believed he owned her world. Standing right beside her, Arthur Sterling lowered his satellite phone, his sharp legal eyes locking onto the camera lens as if he could see straight through the glass into the empty boardroom.

"Good morning, Grant," Arthur’s voice echoed cleanly through the boardroom’s state-of-the-art surround-sound speakers, rich with professional mockery. "I trust you like the new corporate livery. We filed the international maritime transfer papers at midnight. As of sunrise, every physical asset, intellectual property portfolio, and subsidiary holding of Whitmore Urban has been legally absorbed into Aethelgard."

Grant surged forward, slamming both palms down onto the mahogany conference table. "You're insane!" he roared at the screen. "You can't execute an international corporate buyout without shareholder approval! I am the majority voting block!"

Claire stepped closer to the camera, her hand resting gracefully over her seven-month-pregnant stomach. The morning sunlight reflecting off the Maine coast caught the diamond on her left ring finger—not the platinum wedding band he had given her, but a heavy, antique emerald signet ring that had belonged to her grandfather.

"You were the majority voting block, Grant," Claire corrected softly, her voice carrying an eerie, absolute calm. "Until you signed away your proxy voting rights during the Swiss restructuring eighteen months ago. You were too busy explaining your late arrivals from Manhattan to read the fine print about secondary corporate governance."

Grant’s chest heaved. The room felt like it was shrinking, the oxygen burning out of his lungs. "You planned this," he whispered, the truth finally settling over him like a slab of concrete. "For eighteen months? You were playing the long game while I..."

"While you were buying diamond bracelets for Natalie on corporate expense accounts," Claire finished smoothly. "Yes, Grant. Every single dinner, every hotel room, every luxury gift you charged to the company ledger was meticulously cataloged under tax evasion and asset misappropriation statutes. We didn't just take your company. We legally dismantled your right to ever run one again."

Arthur stepped back into the frame, holding a thick document folder up to the camera lens. "Your personal bank accounts are frozen, your corporate credit cards are revoked, and your creditors are currently being notified that Aethelgard Holdings is calling in your personal guarantees by noon. Have a productive Monday, Grant."

The screen flickered violently once, twice, and then cut to black.
