Chapter 28 - The Executive Resignation

Three hundred miles away in Manhattan, the executive boardroom of Aethelgard Holdings was wrapped in a tense, suffocating silence.

Claire Vance stood at the head of the polished Milanese mahogany table, looking down at an unexpected letter of resignation resting beside her iPad. Across the table, Arthur Sterling adjusted his gold-rimmed glasses, his expression grave.

"Julian Thorne has stepped down as CEO of Vanguard Capital," Arthur announced, breaking the quiet. "The SEC investigation triggered by our countersuit uncovered a systemic web of fraudulent debt acquisitions and shell company manipulation. Vanguard’s board is liquidating their commercial assets to avoid criminal indictments."

Claire didn't smile. She picked up the resignation letter, her eyes scanning the neat corporate typography. "And Viktor Vance?"

"Fled the jurisdiction," Arthur replied flatly. "He liquidated his remaining trust holdings and skipped to Zurich before federal marshals could issue a subpoena for his role in the Meridian conspiracy. He’s completely neutralized, Claire. The family trust is cleaner than it has been in three generations."

Claire walked slowly to the massive floor-to-ceiling windows, looking out over the bustling energy of Fifth Avenue. The Aethelgard Tower stood tall and unshakeable, a monument to resilience and ethical fortitude. Yet, her thoughts drifted northward, toward the dense pine forests of upstate New York.

"The foundation's Greenwich literacy center is operating at full capacity," Claire said softly, her voice carrying a deep, reflective cadence. "The children's programs are fully endowed, and local community trust is at an all-time high."

"You're thinking about the man who helped protect it," Arthur observed with quiet perception.

Claire turned to face him, her expression composed and resolute. "He didn't just protect the foundation, Arthur. He proved that his intellect and discipline weren't dependent on a corner office or a billion-dollar valuation. Some men break when the scaffolding falls. Grant built a foundation out of the rubble."
