Chapter 31 - The Warning Signal

The information reached Manhattan within forty-eight hours through quiet, secure channels.
Arthur Sterling walked into Claire Vance’s executive office, holding a confidential intelligence briefing printout. He closed the mahogany door securely behind him before placing the document on her desk.
"We have a security flag, Claire," Arthur said, his tone unusually grave. "Our intelligence assets in Zurich tracked Marcus Thorne meeting with a representative of Viktor Vance. And worse—Thorne paid a visit to the maximum-security facility upstate to speak with Grant Whitmore."
Claire stopped typing, her fingers resting motionless on her keyboard. She looked up at Arthur, her expression tightening into sharp focus. "Did Grant meet with him?"
"He did," Arthur nodded, pulling up a visitor log verification on his tablet. "Thorne was in B-Tier for exactly nine minutes."
A heavy silence settled over the office. For a fleeting second, the old ghosts whispered at the edges of the room—the fear of betrayal, the paranoia of corporate espionage, the unpredictability of a man who had once ruled Wall Street with ruthless ambition.
"What was the outcome?" Claire asked, her voice steady, masking the complex emotional weight of the question.
"Thorne was escorted out by the guards after Whitmore formally refused the meeting's premise," Arthur said, a note of genuine surprise in his voice. "According to our contact inside the prison administration, Grant tore Thorne's business card in half across the table and told him the game was over."
Claire exhaled slowly, the tension easing from her shoulders. She looked down at the small, framed photograph of the Vance-Aethelgard Foundation center sitting beside her laptop.

"He chose his path, Arthur," Claire murmured, a quiet respect underlying her words. "Grant isn't fighting for an empire anymore. He’s building something far more dangerous to men like Viktor Vance: absolute integrity."
"Even so," Arthur warned, folding his arms. "Viktor and Thorne are cornered rats. Desperate men don't care about integrity; they care about destruction. We need to tighten our perimeter."
