Chapter 33 - The Shadow Protocol

The tactical briefing room inside the unmarked federal safehouse on the outskirts of Denver smelled of stale takeout and nervous sweat. The heavy steel door was locked from the inside, and the windows were covered with thick, reinforced blackout blinds to prevent any electronic surveillance from catching their silhouettes.
Liam stood at the head of a battered folding table, spreading a series of high-resolution satellite reconnaissance maps across the surface. The images detailed the precise geographic layout of a private, high-security aviation facility tucked away in the secluded hills outside Geneva, Switzerland—the very tarmac where Viktor Vance’s Gulfstream had landed less than twelve hours earlier.
Jason sat across from him, leaning forward with his elbows on the table, studying the architectural schematics with intense, laser-like focus. Erica sat beside him, her fingers flying over her ruggedized military laptop as she decrypted a secondary stream of encrypted communications intercepted from European telecommunications relays.
"Let’s get one thing straight before we talk logistics," Liam said, his voice cutting cleanly through the quiet room. "Viktor Vance isn't like Arthur. Arthur was arrogant, egotistical, and deeply attached to his physical corporate headquarters in downtown Denver. He wanted everyone to know he was the king of the mountain. Viktor operates entirely in the shadows. He doesn't want public glory; he wants absolute, unobserved leverage over global infrastructure."
Jason looked up from the maps, his expression grim. "And according to Erica’s latest telemetry, he’s already beginning his first major wave of asset consolidation in Europe. If those sovereign debt contracts fully mature and lock into his private mesh network by midnight tomorrow, there won't be a regulatory body on earth with the power to stop him."
"Which means our window to intercept him isn't measured in weeks or days—it’s measured in hours," Liam replied, tapping the tip of a tactical pen against the Geneva airfield schematic. "We can't rely on the DOJ for this. The Department of Justice's jurisdiction ends at the U.S. border, and by the time international arrest warrants crawl through diplomatic channels, Viktor will have scrubbed every server from Geneva to the Middle East."
Erica stopped typing, her fingers resting on the keyboard as she looked up with a deep, worried frown. "Liam... let’s be realistic for a second. We’re talking about flying into an independent European city, infiltrating a private, heavily guarded subterranean server complex, and extracting encrypted master cryptographic keys from a man who makes Arthur look like an amateur. That isn't a tactical operation—that’s a suicide mission."
"It’s only a suicide mission if we play by their rules," Liam said calmly, his eyes meeting Erica’s with absolute, unwavering conviction. "We aren't going in as a military strike force, and we aren't going in as federal agents. We’re going in as ghosts."
Jason nodded slowly, the realization of what had to be done settling heavily into his chest. He wasn't just Arthur Vance’s son anymore; he was the only person left who understood the psychological profile of the Vance family well enough to anticipate their next move.
"Viktor thinks he’s the smartest man in the room because he inherited the family's shadow architecture," Jason said, his voice steady and cold. "He expects us to stay in Denver, licking our wounds and celebrating our domestic victory over my father. He’s not expecting a counter-offensive on his home turf."
"Exactly," Liam agreed, sliding a pair of unmarked passports and international travel itineraries across the table toward Jason and Erica. "We fly out of a private airstrip in Wyoming within the hour. No electronic footprint, no digital trails, no official government clearance. Once we touch down in Zurich, we go completely off the grid."
Erica looked down at the forged passport bearing her photograph and a completely different European alias. A nervous shiver ran down her spine, but beneath the fear, a fierce spark of professional defiance ignited in her chest. She had spent weeks tracking the digital breadcrumbs of the Vance empire, watching innocent people suffer while corrupt billionaires played God with global financial markets. She wasn't about to back down now.
"Give me thirty minutes to configure a portable, Faraday-shielded decryption rig," Erica said, pulling her laptop close and slamming the lid shut with a decisive snap. "If Viktor has his master keys stored on a physical hardware module inside that Geneva vault, I’m going to personally strip it from his hands."
Liam nodded approvingly, sliding his tactical knife back into its sheath on his belt. "Good. Pack light, keep your communication channels dead until we clear Swiss airspace, and remember one rule: trust no one outside this room."

As the three of them stood up from the briefing table, the heavy steel door creaked open slightly, letting in a cool draft of morning air from the hallway. The final phase of the Vance war had officially begun, and there was no turning back.
