Chapter 38 - The Dead Drop

The morning sun broke through the heavy mist over the Rhône Valley, casting long, pale beams across the stone courtyard of the French farmhouse. Inside, the atmosphere was thick with tension. The revelation from the encrypted sub-directory had shifted the entire paradigm of their mission; they were no longer a small strike team wrapping up a domestic family feud—they were sitting on evidence that could destabilize global financial markets and make them prime targets for intelligence agencies far more ruthless than the DOJ.
Jason paced back and forth across the rustic wooden floorboards, his boots clicking rhythmically against the stone. He stopped in front of Erica’s terminal, staring down at the glowing lines of institutional routing data.
"We can't sit here waiting for a tactical team to hunt us down," Jason said, his voice dropping into a hard, decisive register. "If these clearinghouse accounts are linked to international sovereign wealth funds, those institutions already know the Geneva vault went dark. They're looking for the data module right now."
Erica looked up from her screen, her face pale and drawn from lack of sleep. "Jason, if I upload this institutional ledger to an unencrypted public node, it will trigger an automated global financial panic before noon. The sheer volume of exposed sovereign debt manipulation would crash currency exchanges from Tokyo to New York."
"We aren't releasing it publicly," Liam intervened, stepping forward with his phone in hand. "We need a secure dead drop—someone inside an oversight body who has the authority to act on international financial corruption without getting buried by political interference."
Jason frowned, crossing his arms over his chest. "Who? The DOJ has already proven they're out of their depth when it comes to international banking cartels. And Interpol is riddled with political appointees."
"Not everyone," Liam said quietly. He unlocked his encrypted satellite phone and tapped out a rapid series of encrypted data packets, routing them through a secure military relay. "I have an old contact from my intelligence days—Director Vance... no, scratch that. Let's call her Senior Investigator Hayes at the international financial crimes unit in London. She’s spent the last five years trying to pierce the veil of the Basel banking syndicates without institutional support. If we give her the master ledger, she has the legal framework to issue international subpoenas that even the major central banks can't ignore."
In the corner of the room, Viktor let out a dry, humorless laugh, leaning his head back against the wooden chair. "Hayes? You think an idealistic investigator in London is going to take down the Basel clearinghouses, Liam? You're handing a lit match to a toddler standing inside a powder magazine. The moment she opens that file, her own superiors will lock her out of her office and scrub her name from the registry."
"Maybe," Liam replied coldly, walking over to Viktor and glaring down at him. "At least she'll die trying, which is a lot more than can be said for a parasite who traded human misery for sovereign debt leverage."
Jason turned back to Erica, making up his mind with absolute finality. "Erica, package the institutional ledger and the Geneva master keys into a compartmentalized, self-destructing data packet. Set the destination relay directly to Hayes’s private terminal in London."
Erica hesitated for a fraction of a second, her fingers hovering over the trackpad. She looked up at Jason, her eyes searching his face for any sign of doubt. "Are you sure about this, Jason? Once we hit send, there’s no taking it back. We’re declaring war on global finance."
"We didn't start this war," Jason said quietly, placing a steady hand on her shoulder. "We're just finishing it. Hit send."
With a firm, decisive click of the enter key, the encrypted data packet launched from the mobile terminal, shooting across encrypted satellite relays straight toward the heart of London.
Almost instantly, Erica’s terminal let out a sharp, piercing alarm beep. A crimson warning flag flashed across the screen, followed by a terrifying cascade of incoming system override alerts.
"Wait... what's happening?" Erica gasped, her fingers flying across the keyboard to trace the incoming signal. "That wasn't Hayes's terminal. Our outgoing transmission just triggered a localized tracer!"
Liam’s tactical instincts flared instantly. He grabbed his sidearm, rushing to the window and peering through a crack in the wooden shutters.

Down in the valley below, two matte-black, unbranded SUVs were speeding up the winding gravel road toward the farmhouse, their headlights cut, moving with the cold, lethal precision of a professional black-ops extraction squad.
