Chapter 49 - The Digital Aftermath

The twin outboard motors roared to life, biting deep into the churning white-capped swells of the English Channel as Liam threw the RHIB into a sharp, wheel-spinning turn. Spray showered over the bow, freezing instantly in the biting autumn wind as they punched through the breaking surf and headed out into the open sea.

Behind them, the looming limestone cliffs of Portland Bill faded into the dense, slate-grey sea fog, swallowing the subterranean bunker and Viktor Vance's empire whole.

In the cramped hull of the bouncing boat, Erica slumped against the gunwale, breathing heavily as she balanced her terminal on her knees. The screen was scrolling through an endless cascade of automated data packets, tracking the ripple effect of the master ledger purge they had triggered just minutes ago.

"Look at this," Erica whispered, her voice filled with a mixture of awe and disbelief as she pointed the screen toward Jason and Liam. "The global broadcast hit every major financial clearinghouse in Zurich, Frankfurt, and New York simultaneously. Institutional trading has been frozen across three continents."

Jason wiped a spray of salt water from his face, staring down at the glowing text. "And Senior Investigator Hayes? Did the data packet route to her secure terminal in London?"

"It did," Erica nodded, tapping a keystroke to bring up a secure status log. "The Chancellor’s emergency orders were overridden by the Crown's independent oversight committee the moment the ledger hit the public domain. The Home Office has officially dropped the cyber-terrorism warrants against us, and three major bank executives in Zurich have already been detained for emergency questioning."

Liam kept his eyes locked on the horizon, guiding the boat steadily through the rolling swells toward a pre-arranged extraction point along the Hampshire coast. A slow, grim smile touched the corner of his mouth.

"We broke their back," Liam said quietly. "Viktor’s syndicate can’t buy their way out of this when every sovereign government on earth has the raw accounting proof of their money laundering in their hands."

Jason sat back against the cold aluminum bench, the lingering tension in his shoulders finally beginning to ease. For the first time since this entire nightmare began in Denver, the crushing weight of his uncle’s shadow felt like it was lifting.

Yet, as he looked out into the vast, indifferent expanse of the grey sea, a quiet realization settled over him. They had dismantled the infrastructure, but men like Viktor didn't simply vanish into the ether.

Erica suddenly gasped, her fingers freezing over the keyboard as a single, unencrypted data ping popped up on her screen—originating not from London, Zurich, or Geneva, but from a private satellite phone frequency registered to an undisclosed location in the Swiss Alps.
