Chapter 39 - The Siege of the Valley

"We've been compromised," Liam barked, his voice cutting through the farmhouse like a whip. He spun away from the window and grabbed his tactical vest, slamming fresh magazines into his rig with practiced speed. "Grab your gear, now! They traced our outbound packet the second it hit the European relay!"

Erica’s fingers flew across her keyboard in a frantic blur, trying to sever the connection before the incoming squad could download their precise physical coordinates from the routing echo. "I'm trying to scrub the local IP address, but the encryption handshake was too wide! They're locked onto our signal!"

Viktor Vance sat calmly in his wooden chair, a faint, knowing smile playing across his lips despite his bound wrists. "You didn't really think a simple dead drop would bypass the Basel firewalls, did you, boys? The moment you touch the master ledger, the system screams for its owners."

Jason ignored his uncle completely. He rushed over to the workbench, helping Erica disconnect her portable terminal and shoving the hardware modules into her ruggedized backpack. "Erica, get the backup drive. We have to move through the vineyard toward the secondary vehicle in the back."

Before Erica could grab her pack, the heavy wooden front door of the farmhouse exploded inward with a deafening crash. Splintered oak and iron bolts flew across the room as a flash-bang grenade rolled violently across the stone floor.

"Get down!" Liam roared, lunging forward and tackling Jason and Erica behind the heavy oak dining table just as the stun grenade detonated with a blinding flash of white light and an ear-splitting concussion wave that rattled the stone walls to their core.

Thick, acrid smoke filled the room instantly. Through the haze, heavy combat boots stepped over the shattered threshold. Four heavily armed operatives in unbranded tactical gear, wearing night-vision goggles and carrying suppressed carbines, poured into the farmhouse with ruthless, mechanical efficiency.

Liam didn't hesitate. Rising from behind the table even as his ears rang from the blast, he raised his sidearm and fired two rapid, controlled shots. The lead operative staggered backward, hit in the ballistic vest, and crashed hard against the stone wall.

"Cover me!" Liam shouted, firing again to pin the remaining attackers near the entrance.

Jason pulled Erica up by her arm, dragging her low toward the rear kitchen exit that led out into the vine-covered hills behind the farmhouse. "Go, go, go! Through the back!"

As they scrambled toward the exit, Jason glanced back toward the corner of the room. In the chaos of the breach, one of the tactical operatives had already rushed over to Viktor’s chair, cutting his bonds with a combat knife in a single fluid motion.

Viktor stood up smoothly, adjusting his suit jacket without a trace of panic, and accepted a secure satellite handset from the operative. He didn't look back at Jason as he turned and walked calmly out through the shattered front entrance toward their waiting vehicles.

Jason and Liam, shielding Erica between them, burst out the back kitchen door into the chilly morning air, plunging straight into the dense rows of grapevines as a hail of suppressed gunfire chewed through the wooden doorframes behind them.

The vineyard provided immediate cover, the thick wooden stakes and heavy autumn foliage absorbing the incoming rounds as they sprinted blindly down the slope toward the hidden Mercedes SUV parked near the lower treeline.

"Keep moving! Don't stop!" Liam yelled, firing a suppressing burst over his shoulder to keep the tactical squad pinned at the farmhouse.

They reached the vehicle in a matter of seconds. Liam threw open the driver's door, sliding behind the wheel while Jason shoved Erica into the back seat and dove in right behind her. The engine roared to life with a ferocious snarl of rubber and horsepower, kicking up gravel as it surged away from the property just as a fresh wave of operatives crested the ridge above them.

They had escaped the ambush, but as the SUV tore down the mountain road toward the Swiss border, the chilling reality set in: Viktor Vance was free, his network was adapting in real-time, and the global financial elite were now actively hunting them across Europe.
