Chapter 46 - The Overload Protocol

The harsh LED grid of Erica’s terminal flashed a violent, warning red as the titanium drive integrated into the master rack. A high-pitched, metallic whine echoed from the core of the mainframe, signaling that the system’s internal intrusion-countermeasures had just been tripped.

"Jason, you've initiated a full data purge!" Erica yelled over the rising alarm, her fingers flying across the keypad as she tried to establish a firewall. "The drive isn't just self-destructing; it's broadcasting the corrupted master ledger directly to every active regulatory node across the globe simultaneously!"

Viktor Vance lunged forward, his composed mask completely shattered. The aristocratic calm that had shielded him for decades vanished, replaced by a desperate, unfiltered terror. He grabbed Jason by the lapels of his jacket, his voice cracking with fury. "You fool! You absolute fool! You're destroying fifty years of financial stability! Without this ledger, global liquidity will evaporate in minutes. Governments will collapse!"

Jason didn't flinch. He looked down at his uncle’s trembling hands, his expression carved from stone. He peeled Viktor’s fingers away with cold, deliberate force and shoved him back against the cold concrete pillar.

"Let them collapse," Jason said, his voice dead flat. "Stability built on theft and human misery isn't stability, Viktor. It's a cage. And we're burning it down."

Liam kept his weapon trained on the heavy, sealed double doors, his eyes scanning the ceiling vents as the air grew noticeably thinner. "We don't have time for a philosophical debate, Jason. The oxygen counter is dropping faster than Erica calculated. If that terminal doesn't pop these doors open when the purge completes, we're going to suffocate in this tomb."

Erica’s breath came in ragged gasps as the humidity in the sealed vault spiked. Condensation streamed down the concrete walls, and the emergency lights began to flicker, dimming with every drop in the room's atmospheric pressure.

"I'm trying to override the pneumatic deadbolts," Erica coughed, her vision blurring slightly as the carbon dioxide levels climbed into the danger zone. "The system... the system is locking me out. The remote operators in London have initiated a secondary lockdown layer."

"Then bypass the layer," Liam urged, stepping back to shield Erica as a faint, muffled sound echoed from the other side of the heavy steel doors—the unmistakable whine of heavy cutting torches eating through the outer seals.

Viktor slid down the concrete pillar, gasping for air, clutching his chest as he stared at the glowing terminal screen. The progress bar for the global broadcast reached ninety-eight percent.

"They're coming for us," Viktor whispered, a manic, hopeless laugh escaping his lips. "Even if you burn the ledger, my partners won't let you walk out of here alive. The cleanup crew is already at the door."

Jason turned his back on his uncle, stepping up beside Erica as the progress bar hit one hundred percent. The entire bunker shuddered violently, a deep, bone-rattling bass note vibrating through the floorboards as the mainframe core went dark.
