Chapter 44 - Echoes in the Limestone

The interior of the Dorset bunker was a labyrinth of damp concrete corridors, flickering emergency lights, and the heavy, metallic smell of ozone and damp stone. Unlike the high-tech, glowing servers of the Geneva vault, this subterranean facility felt ancient, built to withstand a nuclear exchange, its thick walls muffling the sound of the raging sea outside.

Liam led the tactical formation, his carbine raised, moving with silent, fluid precision around a concrete bend. Jason followed closely behind, his boots making no sound on the wet floor, while Erica brought up the rear, her portable terminal linked directly into the local maintenance conduits to monitor system activity.

"Sensors show anomalous power draws three levels down," Erica whispered through the comms unit, her voice tight. "Someone is brute-forcing the physical air-gapped terminal using a secondary generator."

"Viktor's team," Liam muttered back, slowing his pace as they approached a heavy set of double steel doors marked LEVEL 3: CRYPTOGRAPHIC CORE.

The doors were wide open. Inside the central vault, a single harsh halogen work light illuminated the cavernous room. Standing in the center of the chamber, illuminated by the cold glow of an open mainframe rack, was a familiar figure in a tailored charcoal suit.

Viktor Vance didn't look startled as Liam and Jason stepped through the threshold with their weapons raised. He calmly closed the access panel of the mainframe, tucked a small, rectangular titanium drive into his breast pocket, and turned around to face his nephew with a slow, composed smile.

"You really are persistent, Jason," Viktor said, his voice echoing off the curved concrete ceiling. "Most men, having escaped a French farmhouse, would be halfway across the Atlantic by now. But you just had to see how the story ends."

Jason stepped forward, lowering his weapon slightly, his eyes burning with intense fury. "It ends here, Viktor. Take the drive out of your pocket and put it on the floor."

Viktor let out a soft, dry laugh, shaking his head. "You still don't understand the machinery of the world, do you? This drive isn't just a corporate asset. It's the fail-safe. If you destroy this drive, or if I don't transmit an authentication ping to London within the hour, an automated protocol releases every single hidden debt ledger to every major intelligence agency and financial market simultaneously. Total, unmitigated global collapse."

Liam shifted his stance, his finger resting lightly on the trigger. "He's stalling, Jason. Don't listen to him."

Before Jason could reply, the heavy steel doors behind them slammed shut with a deafening metallic crash, plunging the outer corridor into absolute darkness.
