Chapter 16 - The Commander’s Briefing

The secure conference room at Joint Tactical Base Northern Command buzzed with quiet efficiency as the senior intelligence officers gathered around the central holographic tactical table. On the massive wall screen, global threat matrices and encrypted signals intelligence feeds blinked in steady, synchronized green.
I stood at the head of the table, my uniform impeccably pressed, the gold medal of the Congressional Order of Merit gleaming against my chest.
Colonel Vance walked into the room, tossing a secure red-band folder onto the steel desk in front of me.
“Good morning, Captain,” Vance greeted crisply, taking his seat to my right. “I trust the transition back from your personal leave in Austin was smooth?”
“Smooth and complete, Colonel,” I replied, opening the red-band folder. Inside were the finalized operational directives for Task Force Vanguard’s next major deployment. “The domestic front is entirely secured. The legal proceedings against Lawson & Vance Development are locked in with zero chance of appeal, and our international asset recovery sweep with the DOJ is officially closed.”
“Good,” Vance nodded approvingly. “Because you’re not going to have time to rest on your laurels. The Pentagon just routed a high-priority directive straight from Supreme Allied Command.”
Major Lin tapped her console, projecting a complex, multi-layered tactical map of the North Atlantic and Arctic maritime corridors onto the central holographic display. Flashing amber warning markers blinked furiously across critical deep-sea communication cables and naval logistics chokepoints.
“What am I looking at?” I asked, leaning over the console.
“We’ve detected a massive, coordinated cyber-reconnaissance and physical probing campaign targeting our allied underwater communications cables and Arctic radar installations,” Lin briefed rapidly, highlighting a series of suspicious vessel movements originating from foreign adversaries. “Intelligence suggests this isn't just random espionage. It’s a synchronized probe designed to test our northern defense perimeter ahead of a major geopolitical escalation.”
“And Task Force Vanguard has been tapped to lead the counter-intelligence and tactical interdiction operation,” Colonel Vance added, his eyes locking onto mine. “You’ll be commanding a combined multi-national naval and cyber task force to hunt down these ghost vessels, secure our underwater communication lines, and neutralize any domestic or foreign proxy networks attempting to compromise our infrastructure.”
I stared at the glowing amber markers on the map, feeling that familiar, electric surge of absolute clarity and purpose. My father had spent my entire life trying to confine me to the margins, treating me as a disposable pawn in his corporate games. Now, I was standing at the absolute vanguard of national defense, commanding elite operators and directing strategic counter-operations that spanned continents.

“When do we deploy our reconnaissance assets?” I asked, buttoning my uniform jacket.
“In six hours, Captain,” Vance replied with a faint, respectful smile. “Get your team prepped. You’re shipping out to the North Atlantic.”
