Chapter 9 - The Unclaimed Inheritance

Three days later, the dust of the federal seizure had settled across Austin, leaving my father’s corporate empire dismantled and scattered to the winds.

I stood inside the small, dusty archive room of the downtown county courthouse, accompanied by a probate clerk and a stack of legal documents that had arrived by courier from my late grandfather’s estate attorney.

For years, my father had told me that my grandfather’s will had left everything to the primary family trust—controlled exclusively by Victor and Sandra. But when the DOJ investigators subpoenaed the original safety deposit box records during the embezzlement raid, they discovered a hidden codicil that my father had spent two decades suppressing.

The clerk slid a yellowed, heavy parchment document across the wooden counter.

“Read the designated beneficiary clause, Captain Lawson,” the clerk instructed politely.

My eyes scanned the elegant legal script, handwritten by my grandfather just weeks before he passed away.

...and should my primary son, Victor, ever be found in material breach of fiduciary duty, or utilize estate funds for corporate insolvency, all remaining liquid assets, land holdings, and private trust funds shall instantly revert in full to my granddaughter, Emma Lawson, free and clear of parental oversight.

I stared at the paper, my breath catching in my throat.

It wasn't just a trust fund. It was the original family estate in the hills—the sprawling historic property where my mother and I had lived before she passed away, which my father had illegally seized and turned into a trophy home for Sandra and Brooke.

“The federal prosecutor’s office has already verified the deed,” the clerk said, stamping the document with a heavy red seal. “The estate legally belongs to you now, Captain. The locks have been changed, and the remaining personal effects left behind by your father have been placed in storage.”

I closed the folder, feeling the profound weight of history shifting back into its proper place.

My phone buzzed in my pocket. I pulled it out expecting another desperate message from my stepfamily, but instead, it was an encrypted notification from base command: Orders confirmed. Transfer to Joint Tactical Base Northern Command effective immediately.

My time at the academy was officially over. A new chapter was beginning—one built on my own terms, with my own strength.

I tucked the deed into my duffel bag, walked out of the courthouse into the bright Texas sunshine, and threw open the passenger door of my car.

Before I could turn the ignition, a sharp knock tapped against the driver’s side window.

I turned my head. Standing on the sidewalk in a cheap, rumpled coat, looking ten years older and completely broken, was Brooke.
