Chapter 36 - Echoes of Betrayal

The mastermind chuckled softly, raising his hands in a mock gesture of surrender while his cold eyes scanned our tactical formation with detached amusement.
"A game?" he murmured, shaking his head slowly. "My dear Captain, power is never a game. It is the fundamental law of human civilization. Your father understood that. He built an empire on the exact same principles we use to govern nations from the shadows. You think you've destroyed us by stealing a few hard drives? We are an idea. We are the structural reality of how the world works."
"My father built his empire on lies, theft, and cowardice," I answered, my voice cutting through the damp air of the launch bay with unyielding authority. "And look where it got him. He died a broken man in a federal prison cell because he thought he was above the law. You're about to share his exact destination."
The man's smile flickered, a sudden flash of genuine irritation crossing his polished features.
"You really believe your little military task force can change the world?" he sneered. "Who do you think funds your operations, Captain? Who signs the defense budgets, approves the satellite deployments, and looks the other way when your units cross international borders? The system doesn't want accountability. It wants stability. And stability requires shadows."
"Then we'll burn the shadows down," I said coldly.
"Captain, we don't have time for a philosophical debate," Vance warned quietly, glancing down at his wrist comm as distant alarms began to shift frequency. "Their secondary reaction team is descending the main lift shaft right now."
I nodded, keeping my weapon locked on the mastermind while gesturing to two of our strike operators. "Secure him. Zip-tie his wrists and prep him for sub-surface extraction. He’s coming with us."
Before the operators could step forward, the mastermind’s expression shifted into a dark, knowing smirk.

"You can take me, Captain," he whispered softly, his eyes fixing on mine with chilling intensity. "You can chain me, interrogate me, and lock me away in a military black site until the end of time. But the machine is already moving. Another node is already initializing. You haven't killed the syndicate... you've only made it angry."
Before I could issue another command, a deafening explosion ripped through the upper gantry, sending a cascade of heavy concrete debris crashing down between us.
