Chapter 39 - The Weight of Command

The sun was setting over the snow-capped peaks of the northern mountain range, casting a brilliant, golden hue across the expansive flight line of Joint Tactical Base Northern Command.

I stood alone on the outdoor observation deck of the command tower, wrapped in my heavy wool uniform coat, watching the steady, synchronized departure of our regional strike aircraft as they rotated out for routine global patrols.

My promotion to Colonel was official. The ghosts of Lawson & Vance were entirely buried in the past—Victor serving his forty-year federal sentence without parole, Brooke and Sandra struggling to survive in a cramped Austin apartment far from the trappings of unearned privilege, and the global syndicates shattered by our relentless pursuit of justice.

The heavy door behind me opened quietly, and Master Sergeant—now Command Sergeant Major—Vance stepped out onto the observation deck, holding two steaming cups of black coffee.

"Evening, Colonel," Vance said respectfully, handing me one of the cups before leaning against the metal railing beside me.

"Evening, Sergeant Major," I replied, taking a warm sip as the cold mountain wind whipped past us. "Looks like we have a much larger sandbox to patrol now."

"A bigger sandbox means more room to keep things clean," Vance grinned faintly, gazing out across the horizon. "Though I have to ask... do you ever look back at how this whole journey started? From those cold steps outside the academy gates where your family turned their backs on you, to standing at the top of the entire defense apparatus?"

I looked down at the gold medal resting against my chest, feeling the deep, unbreakable strength of the path I had carved out entirely on my own terms.

"I don't look back, Sergeant Major," I said softly, my eyes fixed on the boundless, unwritten horizon stretching out endlessly before us. "Every closed door, every betrayal, and every trial didn't break me. It forged me into an instrument of absolute accountability."

I raised my coffee cup toward the fading sun in a silent salute to the horizon.

"Let's check the roster," I ordered, turning back toward the command center with firm, resolute steps. "The world is full of shadows, and we have a new legacy to protect."
