Chapter 8 - The Fall of the Estate

The silence on the other end of the line was absolute. For sixty years, nobody had ever dared call my father by his first name—let alone reject him with such utter, unyielding finality.

“Emma...” he whispered, the sound cracking with sudden, desperate disbelief. “I am your father. We raised you. We gave you a roof over your head—!”

“You gave me a cage and called it a home,” I interrupted, every word sharp as a scalpel. “You spent my entire life trying to erase me to make room for Brooke. You gave away my VIP ticket, you locked me out in the rain, and you stole from my grandfather’s trust to fund your failing lies. And now, you want my help?”

“You can’t do this to us!” My father’s voice suddenly snapped back into a furious, defensive roar, the mask of desperation shattering to reveal the tyrant underneath. “If the federal government seizes this estate, we are ruined! You’ll destroy this family over a petty grudge!”

“There is no family left, Victor,” I said calmly. “You destroyed it a long time ago. Now you’re just paying the audit.”

I reached out and tapped the end-call button, cutting him off mid-sentence. The screen went dark, plunging the phone into a final, permanent silence.

Agent Miller watched me with a quiet, approving nod. “Cold, Captain. But entirely necessary.”

“It’s not cold,” I said, standing up and buttoning my uniform jacket. “It’s just justice.”

At 7:00 AM, the morning sun broke over the horizon, casting a golden light across the academy parade grounds where hundreds of newly commissioned junior officers stood in rigid, perfect formations.

I stood at the head of my platoon, my boots planted firmly on the asphalt, the gold medal of the Congressional Order of Merit gleaming against my chest in the morning light.

Major General Grant walked down the line, stopping beside me with a subtle nod.

“Word just came through from downtown, Lawson,” Grant muttered under his breath, keeping his eyes straight ahead on the troops. “Federal marshals executed search warrants at the Lawson estate an hour ago. Your father and stepmother were escorted off the premises in handcuffs.”

A strange, quiet peace settled over my chest. The ghosts were gone. The debt was paid.

“Thank you, General,” I murmured.

“Don't thank me, Captain,” Grant replied, a faint smile touching his lips. “You earned every bit of this.”
