Chapter 30 - The New Legacy

The heavy steel doors of the launch bay hissed open, flooding the subterranean hangar with the damp, chilling mist of the Arctic ocean. Outside, the dark, churning waters of the Barents Sea lapped violently against the submerged platform of our advanced nuclear-class submarine, the USS Vanguard.

I stood at the head of the embarkation ramp, dressed head-to-toe in specialized deep-sea tactical gear, my service sidearm securely holstered at my hip, and the gold medal of the Congressional Order of Merit gleaming quietly inside my inner breast pocket.

Master Sergeant Vance walked up beside me, checking the pressure seals on his rebreather mask with practiced efficiency.

“All strike teams are boarded and secured in the wet-deck lockouts, Captain,” Vance reported, his voice echoing cleanly through his comm-unit. “Submarine is fully pressurized and ready to dive on your mark.”

I looked back down the long, immaculate corridor of the forward base, pausing for a final moment to reflect on how far the journey had come. From the cold, rain-soaked steps outside the academy gates, where my family had slammed the door in my face and left me to drown in their indifference, to the grand stone veranda of the Austin estate where I had watched their artificial empire turn to dust—every single trial, betrayal, and hardship had served a singular purpose.

They hadn't broken me. They had forged me.

The Lawson name no longer stood for corporate fraud, forged trust funds, or social posturing. It stood for unyielding discipline, absolute honor, and the uncompromising pursuit of justice.

“Captain?” Vance prompted quietly, a respectful, knowing smile visible behind his visor. “We have a station to secure.”

I turned back toward the dark, yawning expanse of the submarine hatch, pulling my rebreather mask down over my face and securing my helmet with a sharp, definitive click.

“Let’s dive, Sergeant,” I said, stepping forward into the abyss. “We have a new legacy to write.”
