Chapter 44 - The Pentagon’s Shaking Foundation

The color drained entirely from General Harrison Vance’s face, leaving his skin the shade of wet concrete as he stared at the small flash drive resting on the steel table. For the first time since he walked into the bunker, the armor of untouchable bureaucratic arrogance completely shattered, revealing the desperate, cornered tyrant underneath.
“You didn’t...” Harrison whispered, his voice trembling with sudden, uncontained fury as he half-stood from his chair, leaning across the table toward me. “You bypassed the entire chain of command?! Do you have any idea what you’ve just done, Colonel?! You’ve declared war on the very institution that gave you your commission!”
“No, General,” I answered, my voice cutting through the damp air of the vault like a scalpel as I met his furious gaze with absolute, unyielding composure. “I declared war on corruption. My father spent his entire life believing that social standing, political donations, and institutional titles made him immune to the law. He died a broken man in a federal prison cell because he never learned the difference between power and accountability. It appears you’re about to receive the exact same lesson.”
General Harrison slammed his fist down onto the table, rattling the holographic consoles. “Arrest her!” he roared, turning to his military police aides standing near the doorway. “By executive order of the Office of Strategic Infrastructure, Colonel Lawson is hereby relieved of duty for insubordination, treasonous data dissemination, and breach of military security! Confiscate all terminals and lock down this facility immediately!”
The two military police officers stepped forward, reaching for the handcuffs clipped to their utility belts—and then stopped dead in their tracks as the heavy reinforced steel doors of the briefing vault swung open with a loud, hydraulic hiss.
Standing in the doorway, flanked by a full platoon of armed base security guards and a senior investigator from the Department of Justice, was Colonel Marcus Vance of Northern Command’s legal division.
“Stand down, Marines,” Colonel Vance commanded crisply, his hand resting comfortably on his sidearm as he stepped into the room. “The only person being placed under arrest today is you, General Harrison.”
Harrison whipped around, his eyes wide with disbelief as he pointed a shaking finger at the DOJ investigator. “This is an outrage! I am the Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense! You have no jurisdiction here!”

“General Harrison Vance,” the DOJ investigator stated clearly, opening a heavy legal folder and sliding an arrest warrant across the table. “You are formally charged with federal wire fraud, conspiracy against the United States, abuse of classified appropriations, and aiding international economic espionage through the Janus network. Federal marshals have already executed simultaneous search warrants at your Pentagon office and your private residence in Virginia.”
The room was dead silent. General Harrison slowly sank back into his chair, his hands trembling violently as he stared at the arrest warrant. The invisible machine that had governed the shadows of the defense establishment for twenty years had just been unceremoniously dismantled by a single unyielding officer who refused to play by their rules.
