Chapter 47 - Shadows on the Horizon

The sun was dipping below the rugged horizon of the northern mountain range, casting a brilliant, fiery orange glow across the expansive flight line of Northern Command.
I stood on the outdoor observation deck of the command tower, wrapped in my heavy wool uniform coat, watching the synchronized departure of our global strategic transport aircraft as they rotated out for routine international patrols.
Command Sergeant Major Vance stepped out onto the observation deck beside me, holding two steaming cups of dark, bitter military coffee.
“Well, Colonel,” Vance said, handing me a cup before leaning against the metal railing. “General Harrison is sitting in a federal holding cell awaiting trial, the Janus network is completely eradicated, and the Vanguard Protocol is officially federal law. Does this mean we finally get a quiet weekend off?”
I took a slow sip of the coffee, letting the heat warm my fingers as the crisp mountain wind whipped past us.
“Quiet, Sergeant Major?” I smiled faintly, gazing out across the endless horizon. “The Janus network was just one branch of a much larger global tree. Corruption doesn't sleep, and neither do we.”
My phone vibrated softly in my pocket—a secure, encrypted priority alert routed directly from our global intelligence grid. I pulled it out, scanning the incoming data stream: an anomalous financial transaction and encrypted satellite ping traced back to an offshore banking hub in Zurich, bearing the exact cryptographic signature of the mastermind who had escaped us in the Barents Sea.
He thought he was safe. He thought that by blowing up a gantry and hiding behind a network of proxies, he had escaped our reach. He didn't understand the fundamental rule of the world I now commanded: you can run into the shadows all you want, but the Vanguard is coming for you.

I locked the phone screen, slipping it back into my pocket with absolute, unyielding resolve.
“Finish your coffee, Sergeant Major,” I ordered, turning back toward the command center with firm, purposeful steps. “We have a new target.”
