Chapter 14 - The Basement Desk

The human resources department of the newly rebranded Pierce-Calloway Holdings was located in the sub-basement of the midtown operations center, far removed from the panoramic glass suites of the executive floors.

Ethan sat at a cramped laminate desk beneath flickering fluorescent lights, staring at a company-issued laptop that had access only to basic administrative spreadsheets. His phone had been replaced with a bare-bones cellular device capable only of internal calls and emergency contacts.

It was day four of his new existence.

Every morning, he took the subway from an unassuming one-bedroom rental in Astoria—an apartment paid for by the firm's transition fund. Every morning, he signed a logbook at the security desk, subjected to the same metal detector scans as junior couriers and janitorial staff.

At 10:15 AM, his landline phone buzzed.

"Ethan Calloway," he answered mechanically.

"Mr. Calloway, this is Arthur Vance," his attorney said, his tone unusually urgent. "I’m in the lobby upstairs. We need to speak immediately."

Ethan stood up so quickly his metal chair screeched against the linoleum. He took the freight elevator up to the ground-floor mezzanine, where Arthur was waiting near the coffee kiosk, clutching a thick manila folder.

"Did you file the motion to contest the trust transfer?" Ethan asked the moment they reached a quiet corner near the decorative fountain.

"Forget the trust transfer, Ethan," Arthur said in a strained whisper, looking nervously over his shoulder at the private security guards posted near the revolving doors. "We have a much bigger problem. Vanessa didn't just sign the surrender documents on Tuesday."

Ethan’s eyes narrowed. "What are you talking about?"

"Before she left the building, Vanessa had a private forty-minute meeting with Declan Pierce's personal head of intelligence," Arthur said, opening the manila folder just enough for Ethan to glimpse internal bank statements bearing unfamiliar account numbers. "She didn't just give up the Tribeca apartment. She handed over your private encrypted drive—the one from the safe in your Hamptons study."

Ethan felt the breath violently knocked out of his lungs. "How... how did she get into that safe?"

"She had the code, Ethan. You gave it to her last summer when you had her retrieve your emergency passport," Arthur said, his eyes filled with disbelief at his client’s sheer recklessness. "On that drive were the private accounting ledgers from three years ago. The ones regarding your father’s estate transfer."

The color drained from Ethan’s face until his skin looked like chalk.

"Grace doesn't know about that," Ethan muttered, his fingers clutching Arthur’s forearm with bruising force. "She couldn't possibly understand those transactions. Those were private family settlements before our wedding."

"Grace might not have understood them three years ago, Ethan," Arthur replied grimly. "But Declan Pierce has thirty forensic accountants who specialize in offshore inheritance fraud. They spent the entire night decrypting those files."

Arthur pulled out a single sheet of paper and handed it to Ethan.

It was an official notification of inquiry from the New York State Attorney General’s Charities and Estates Bureau.

"Declan didn't just find company theft, Ethan," Arthur said, his voice trembling slightly. "He found the paper trail proving that the initial eight million dollars you claimed to bring into Calloway Capital as founder equity... didn't belong to your father's estate at all."

Ethan stared at the seal of the Attorney General.

"It was drawn directly from Grace's late mother's medical endowment trust," Arthur whispered. "You siphoned it out three weeks before you proposed to her in Paris."

Ethan staggered back against the marble pillar. The air in the sunlit lobby felt instantly toxic.

"If Grace sees this..." Ethan choked out.

"She already has it," Arthur said, closing the folder with a sharp snap. "Declan delivered the unsealed files to her penthouse at eight this morning. And Ethan... her doctor just admitted her to Mount Sinai for emergency observation due to sudden hypertensive stress."
