Chapter 44 - The Unbroken Line

The car was dead silent except for the rhythmic thumping of the windshield wipers against the glass.

Grace looked down at the parchment. Her brow furrowed at the aged texture, the faded ink, the embossed legal seal of the Vance law firm in Boston dated October 16th, 1992.

"What is this?" she asked, her voice barely audible.

"Read it," Ethan said.

Her fingers trembled slightly as she touched the yellowed paper. Her eyes scanned the first lines—the formal bequeathment to Samuel Vance, the two-million-dollar escrow transfer, the instructions regarding Marcus Calloway.

Then her eyes hit the third paragraph.

Ethan watched the color drain from her face in real time. It wasn't a gradual fade; it was an instantaneous shock that left her lips pale, her breath catching in her throat with a sharp, ragged gasp.

*'Because Clara was not born alone.'*

Grace’s hand flew to her mouth. Her eyes widened, darting across the final lines like a person trapped in a burning room:

*'A twin sister. A daughter who was placed forty-eight hours later with an unconnected family in New Haven under the legal name of Grace.'*

"No," Grace whispered. The parchment fluttered in her trembling grip. "No. This... this is impossible. This is a forgery. Calloway made this to—"

"It’s not a forgery," Ethan interrupted, his voice steady, solemn, and devastating. "It’s in Richard Pierce’s personal handwriting. The notary seal belongs to my father. The ink and paper aging match the 1992 archive vaults in Boston. Samuel kept this hidden behind the binding of his private ledger for thirty-two years."

"Clara..." Grace choked out the name, her gaze snapping to Ethan, filled with a wild, disorienting horror. "Clara Sterling is... my sister?"

"Your identical twin," Ethan said softly. "Born thirty minutes before you at St. Margaret’s in Connecticut. Your mother died during the secondary delivery. Richard Pierce was under federal investigation by the SEC and Marcus Calloway was threatening to expose his offshore trusts. Richard panicked. He couldn't hide two infants under the Sterling family name without triggering an audit of his domestic assets. So he split you."

Grace dropped the paper onto her lap as if it were coated in poison. She pressed her back hard against the leather seat, her breathing shallow, rapid, terrified.

"Clara was the heir," Grace whispered, her voice fracturing. "Clara was given the Sterling family name, the trust funds, the prep schools, the society debuts. And I was sent to a dockworker's house in New Haven with an anonymous check and a dead priest's promise."

"Richard Pierce was a monster, Grace," Ethan said, reaching out to steady her arm, but she flinched away from his touch.

"And you?" she gasped, her eyes blazing with sudden, furious betrayal. "You knew Clara was my sister when you hired me? When you brought me into Vance & Associates three years ago to research Pierce Capital's corporate structure?"

"No!" Ethan said fiercely, leaning in, forcing her to see the truth in his face. "I swear on my life, Grace, I found this ninety minutes ago in Samuel’s locked safe at the townhouse. My father took this secret to his grave. He never wrote it into the firm's manifests. He kept you hidden because if Richard Pierce ever tried to cut Samuel out of the family trusts, Samuel could produce you and destroy Richard's entire estate."

Grace sat frozen, tears finally spilling over her dark lashes, tracing the curve of cheeks that were, line for line, identical to the woman who had just signed a forty-billion-dollar contract on the thirty-eighth floor of the Carlyle.

"Clara doesn't know," Grace stated, her voice shaking violently.

"No."

"And what happens if she finds out?" Grace demanded, her voice rising with an edge of raw panic. "What happens to the merger? What happens to her baby?"

"The Thorne agreement requires sole, undisputed heirship," Ethan said flatly. "If Alexander Thorne discovers that Richard Pierce left a living co-heir whose rights were unlawfully suppressed for thirty-two years, the restructuring contracts are void for fraud. Calloway's predatory funds will trigger an immediate receivership. Pierce Capital will be liquidated by the banks by Friday."

Grace stared at the paper on her lap, the weight of a shattered reality crushing down on her shoulders.

Then her phone began to vibrate against the leather console.

The caller ID flashed across the illuminated dashboard screen:
