Chapter 70 - The Unopened Warning

The speakerphone buzzed softly with the transatlantic connection. The crisp, formal voice of Henri Laurent, chief custodian of the Geneva Private Depository, carried clearly through the Manhattan boardroom.
*"Mr. Julian Pierce? Mrs. Clara Pierce? Are you there?"*
"We are here, Monsieur Laurent," Clara said, leaning over the table, her heart suddenly quickening its beat. "Ethan is here with us as well."
*"Very well,"* Laurent continued in measured French-accented English. *"Under Swiss federal protocol, we were instructed to open box four-zero-eight only upon the authenticated reconstitution of Eleanor Pierce’s direct heirs. We have unsealed the inner compartment. Inside, there is a wax-sealed envelope addressed to 'My Children: Ethan, Clara, and Julian.'"*
Ethan stepped forward, his eyes fixed on the phone. "What is the date on the postmark, Laurent?"
*"October fourteenth, nineteen ninety-four. The afternoon before your father’s fatal accident on Lake George."*
Clara looked at Ethan, a cold unease suddenly settling over the triumph of the morning. "What did he write, Laurent? Can you read the exterior memorandum?"
*"There is a handwritten note clipped to the outside of the wax seal,"* Laurent said, the rustle of archival paper audible over the line. *"It reads: 'If you are reading this together, Arthur Calloway has fallen. But you must not celebrate. Arthur was only the collector. The true debt was incurred in nineteen eighty-four by a silent partner who still sits on the federal bench in New York. If Clara marries into the Sterling family, the entire trust is a trap.'"*
Clara gasped. Her hand flew to her mouth.
The Sterling family.
The institutional board member who had just voted with Clara ten minutes ago—the man who had readily ceded his proxy to the Pierce family trust—was Thomas Sterling, whose son, David Sterling, had been introduced to Clara three weeks ago by her own legal team as an ally.
Ethan’s face went completely rigid. All the warmth of their victory vanished in an instant, replaced by a calculating, dangerous fury.
"Laurent," Ethan commanded into the phone. "Does the envelope contain the name of the federal judge?"
*"The wax seal is unbroken, Mr. Vance,"* Laurent replied steadily. *"Under Swiss trust regulations, the seal may only be broken in the presence of all three living heirs in our Geneva office. However, attached to the back of the envelope is an authenticated bank draft from nineteen eighty-four."*
"Made out to whom?" Julian asked, his voice shaking.
*"A private account in Boston,"* Laurent said. *"Account holder: Eleanor Calloway-Pierce and Marcus Vance. The memo line contains a single sentence: 'In consideration of the permanent concealment of the second child.'"*
The boardroom went dead, terrifyingly silent.
Clara gripped the edge of the table, her breath catching in her throat as the room seemed to tilt beneath her feet. The baby inside her kicked with sudden, violent urgency.
Ethan turned his head slowly, looking at Clara, then at Julian.
"The second child," Clara whispered, her voice barely a breath. "Ethan was born in nineteen eighty-eight. Julian was born in Geneva in nineteen ninety-two. And I was born in New York."
She looked at Julian, then at Ethan.
"Eleanor didn't have one child taken," Ethan said, the realization hitting him like a physical blow. "There was another child. A child Marcus and Eleanor hid four years before I was born."
Outside the high glass windows of the forty-eighth floor, the elevator chime rang softly.

The heavy double doors of the boardroom swung open once more. Standing in the entrance was Thomas Sterling, flanked by two armed federal officers wearing badges Clara had never seen before—bearing the gold crest of the United States Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court.
"Clara Pierce," Thomas Sterling said with a cold, sympathetic smile, holding up a black leather folder bearing a federal judicial seal. "Step away from the table. By order of the Chief Judge of the Second Circuit, this entire building—and everything Ethan Vance brought from Boston—is under immediate national security sequestration."
