Chapter 24 - The Legal Ambush

The knock on the suite’s mahogany door was brisk, professional, and entirely devoid of hesitation.

Before Declan could reach the handle, the door opened. Two men in charcoal suits stepped inside, followed by a woman in a tailored navy blazer carrying a leather document folio. She had gray hair pulled back into a severe bun and the unmistakable posture of a federal litigator.

"Mr. Pierce, Mrs. Calloway," the woman said, her voice smooth and devoid of emotion. "I am Evelyn Cross, senior partner at Cross & Sterling, representing the Calloway Family Estate."

Declan immediately moved to block her path, his frame filling the entryway. "You have thirty seconds to turn around and leave this private medical floor, Ms. Cross, before hospital security and my personal detail have you escorted out in cuffs."

Evelyn Cross didn't blink. She smoothly extracted an embossed court order from her folder and held it at eye level.

"This is an emergency order of protective inventory issued by Judge Lawrence of the New York County Surrogate's Court," Cross said calmly. "It establishes a temporary federal monitor over any legal or financial documents executed on behalf of Julian Calloway-Pierce. It also serves notice of an international deposition regarding the eighty-five million dollar legacy settlement."

Grace stepped forward, her hospital gown swishing softly, but her presence commandingly royal. "You're serving court papers in a maternity recovery room? On a child who was born five hours ago?"

"Mrs. Calloway, I respect your condition," Cross replied, her tone unyielding. "However, your husband's father—the rightful patriarch of the estate—has invoked the 1994 Calloway Lineage Accord. When Ethan Calloway signed his marriage certificate with you four years ago, he ratified an automatic trust trigger. Any male child born of this marriage is legally designated as the primary beneficiary of the Zurich holdings."

Ethan stepped up beside Grace, his jaw clenched so tight a vein pulsed at his temple. "I revoked every family agreement when I liquidated my personal holdings four months ago. I signed over all rights to Grace."

"You signed over your *corporate* assets in Calloway Holdings, Mr. Calloway," Cross countered, turning her sharp gaze upon him. "You cannot sign away your bloodline’s fiduciary obligations. Under New York probate law, an offshore generational trust established prior to your corporate insolvency remains entirely active."

Cross looked between Ethan, Grace, and Declan.

"Marcus Calloway is not asking for custody of the child, Mrs. Calloway," Cross said carefully. "He knows his health will not permit it. What he is demanding is an immediate, notarized biological verification and Julian’s formal enrollment in the Swiss trust. In exchange, the eighty-five million dollars will clear immediately into an irrevocable trust managed exclusively by you."

Grace narrowed her eyes. "And what's the catch, Ms. Cross? Men like Marcus Calloway don't hand over eighty-five million dollars out of paternal affection."

"The catch," Cross said, turning her gaze directly toward Declan Pierce, "is that the trust explicitly prohibits any corporate merger, asset pledge, or financial integration between Calloway holdings and Pierce Capital. If Declan Pierce retains even a single voting share or board seat in any entity managing Julian’s trust, the entire eighty-five million liquidates into a hostile short position against Pierce Capital’s primary banking lines."

Declan let out a cold, sharp breath. "It's a decapitation strike. Marcus wants to force Grace to cut me out completely."

"He wants to separate the families forever," Cross corrected smoothly. "Or destroy Pierce Capital in the process. You have until tomorrow at noon to submit the DNA verification and sign the trust covenant, Mrs. Calloway. If you refuse, the proxy war begins in the open market."

Cross placed the court documents on the side table, offered a polite, icy nod, and turned, walking out with her associates.

The door clicked shut.

Ethan turned to Grace. His face was pale, his eyes filled with a desperate, heavy realization.

"Grace," Ethan whispered. "She's right. Marcus isn't coming for Julian. He's using Julian to finish his war with Declan's family. And he's using you as the weapon."
