Chapter 4 - The Forty-Second Floor

The boardroom of Pierce Global Holdings looked out over a gray, rain-swept Manhattan skyline. The glass walls were soundproofed to absolute silence, cutting off the roar of the city below.

Ethan pushed the heavy glass door open.

Grace sat at the center of the massive quartz conference table. She had changed out of her maternity dress into a tailored black wool pantsuit that emphasized her advanced pregnancy with an undeniable, formidable elegance. She wasn't looking at him when he entered. She was reviewing a stack of legal documents with a red fountain pen.

At the head of the table sat Declan Pierce, idly spinning a heavy silver fountain pen between his fingers.

“Sit down, Ethan,” Declan said, not unkindly, but with the flat authority of a man who owned the building, the floor, and the air they were breathing.

Ethan didn't sit. He gripped the back of a leather chair, his knuckles white. “Grace. What is this? If you wanted a divorce, we could have handled this like civilized adults instead of bringing in corporate hitmen.”

Grace finally looked up. Her eyes were ice-blue, devoid of the warmth he had taken for granted for half a decade.

“Civilized, Ethan?” Grace’s voice was remarkably calm. “Like the way you utilized firm funds to purchase a penthouse in Miami under Vanessa’s maiden name? Or civilized like the way you systematically diluted my father’s trust equity while pretending to manage our family estate?”

Ethan swallowed hard, his throat dry. “Where did you—who gave you that?”

“I did,” Declan said, leaning back in his chair and crossing one ankle over his knee. “Grace came to my office four months ago. She didn't want a messy divorce, Ethan. She wanted a complete corporate restructuring. And as it turns out, Pierce Global has been looking to acquire a controlling stake in boutique legal-advisory firms in the tri-state area. Calloway & Vance fit our portfolio quite nicely.”

“You can't do that,” Ethan shouted, slamming his hand onto the table. “That firm is my legacy! My father built—”

“Your father built it,” Grace interrupted, her voice cutting through his anger like a scalpel, “and you spent the last three years dismantling it to fund your mistresses and high-risk real estate gambles. I didn't steal your legacy, Ethan. I rescued what was left of it.”

She slid a single document across the table toward him.

“Sign the voluntary relinquishment of your partnership shares,” Grace said quietly, placing one hand gently over her swollen stomach. “Do it now, and Pierce Global will absorb your personal liabilities and allow you to walk away without a federal investigation into your corporate embezzlement.”

Ethan stared at the paper. The signature line at the bottom was blank, waiting for his name.
