Chapter 61 - The Federal Warrant

The wail of the sirens cut through the heavy Boston rain, sharp and deafening against the stone facade of the Beacon Hill townhouse. Red and blue strobes flashed violently across the high parlor windows, painting the antique moldings in fractured pulses of emergency light.

Clara stood frozen on the Persian rug, the yellowed hospital stationery clutched in her hand. Her pulse hammered against her temples so hard she could barely breathe. The baby kicked sharply beneath her coat, a sudden, frantic flutter that forced her to press her palm against her abdomen.

She looked at Ethan.

He hadn’t moved. He stood before the open steel safe, his fingers still locked around the edges of the dark green leather ledger. His usually impassive face had drained of color, his jaw clenched so tightly the muscles in his cheek twitched under the flashing light. America’s youngest billionaire—the man who had bought up debt across three continents without blinking, the ruthless financial tactician who had stepped in to help Clara tear down Arthur Calloway’s empire—was staring at the floor where the hospital slip had fallen.

"Eleanor Pierce was your mother," Clara whispered, her voice trembling in the cavernous room. "You... you aren't an outsider. You're my brother."

Ethan didn't answer immediately. His dark eyes flicked down to the certified birth certificate in the velvet box, then toward the front entryway where the heavy front doors rattled under the force of authoritative pounding.

"Federal agents! Open the door! We have a search warrant for the premises and an administrative freeze on all records belonging to the Pierce estate!"

Julian stepped between Clara and the window, his expression grim. "Calloway did this. The moment we touched down at Logan Airport, his contacts at the regional compliance office pulled the trigger. They don't know what’s in this safe, Clara, but they know we came to Boston to find it."

"They can't have it," Clara said fiercely, folding the birth record and sliding it deep into the inner pocket of her wool coat. The realization of what she held was staggering, but survival instincts honed over months of corporate warfare took over. "If Arthur Calloway gets his hands on this ledger, he’ll incinerate it just like he did the records in ninety-two. He’ll erase Ethan all over again."

Ethan finally turned. The shock in his eyes had hardened into something cold, sharp, and terrifyingly focused. He closed the green ledger with a muted thud.

"Julian," Ethan commanded, his voice dropping an octave, completely steady despite the sirens screaming outside. "Take the rear conservatory exit. The townhouse connects to the carriage house on Mount Vernon Street through the lower wine cellar. My driver is stationed on the opposite corner with the tinted Suburban."

"I'm not leaving you here with federal agents," Julian replied instantly.

"You aren't protecting me, Julian. You're protecting Clara and that child," Ethan said, his voice leaving no room for argument. He looked Clara directly in the eyes. For the first time since she had met him on the forty-second floor in Manhattan, there was no corporate armor between them. There was only the unmistakable, piercing gray of their father’s eyes looking right back at her. "Take the cassette tape and the ledger. Walk out through the tunnel. If they search me, they find nothing but an investor looking at historic real estate."

"Ethan, no," Clara stepped toward him, catching his arm. "They have a warrant. If you're caught withholding material documents—"

"They don't have jurisdiction over me in Massachusetts, Clara," Ethan said softly, his fingers closing gently over hers for a fraction of a second before releasing her. "Marcus Vance spent thirty years making sure my legal shield was impenetrable. Go. Now."

The front door groaned under the impact of a breaching ram. Glass shattered in the outer vestibule.

Julian grabbed Clara's elbow, guiding her swiftly toward the concealed service door behind the walnut bookcase. Clara looked back just as the parlor double doors burst open. Half a dozen tactical officers and suited federal investigators swarmed into the room, badges held high, weapons drawn at the low ready.

Ethan Vance didn't flinch. He stood alone in the center of the ancestral parlor, his hands resting casually in his slacks pockets, watching the federal agents storm his mother’s sanctuary with the calm contempt of an emperor who had just discovered his birthright.
