Chapter 22 - The Maine Mirage

The words hung in the air like a death sentence.

Ethan froze, the phone pressed tight against his ear, his knuckles trembling. Across the room, Declan instantly hit a button on his smartwatch, triggering an audio trace through his personal cybersecurity unit. Grace stood motionless, one hand resting protectively over baby Julian’s chest.

"Arthur," Ethan choked out, his voice raw. "Where are you? What did you just say?"

"I am where I have been obligated to be for the last six years, Ethan," Arthur replied calmly. His voice carried the dry, mechanical cadence of a lawyer reading a deed, but beneath it lay a profound, exhausting weariness. "And you need to listen very carefully to me. Do not make any sudden public disclosures. Do not attempt to reject the Swiss transfer. If you decline the deposit within forty-eight hours, the default covenants activate."

"What default covenants?" Declan intercepted, his voice cutting through the speaker with commanding authority. "This is Declan Pierce, Arthur. You are currently party to an unauthorized financial transfer involving a minor child under my legal corporate guardianship. If you don't explain who authorized that eighty-five million dollars, I will have INTERPOL and the Swiss Financial Market Supervisory Authority freeze every asset tied to your name before sunset."

A dry, bitter chuckle sounded on the other end of the line.

"Mr. Pierce," Arthur said softly. "I expected you would be in the room. You are brilliant, ambitious, and utterly blind to the foundation your own family built. Do you truly believe your late father built Pierce Capital purely on market foresight? Do you think the Calloway collapse twenty years ago was an accident of bad investments?"

Declan stiffened. For the first time since Ethan had met the young billionaire, Declan looked genuinely caught off guard.

"Arthur, stop talking in riddles!" Ethan shouted into the phone, losing all composure. "My father died in Morristown Memorial! I identified his body! I paid for the plot in Holy Cross Cemetery!"

"You identified a man whose face had been destroyed in a car fire, Ethan," Arthur said bluntly. "You accepted dental records provided by a coroner whose clinic was funded by a Calloway family endowment. You buried a stranger."

Grace gasped, clamping a hand over her mouth. Her eyes darted to Ethan, seeing the profound, horrifying shock washing over his face. This was not the guilt of a liar; it was the total psychological devastation of a son learning his entire life had been a constructed stage.

"Why?" Ethan whispered, his knees nearly giving out. "Why would he do that to me? He let me carry his debts. He let me spend ten years scraping through the mud to rebuild our name!"

"Because as long as Marcus Calloway was dead, the Pierce family couldn't finish destroying him," Arthur answered. "And more importantly... Marcus knew you would never be ruthless enough to take back what was stolen unless you were forced to survive on your own."

"And Julian?" Grace demanded, stepping toward the phone, her voice shaking with righteous fury. "Why drag my son into this? He was born four hours ago! What kind of monster puts eighty-five million dollars on an infant's head?"

"Not a monster, Mrs. Calloway," Arthur said, his tone softening slightly. "A grandfather who never left. The eighty-five million is not a gift. It is the original twenty-two percent equity stake Marcus owned in Pierce Capital's founding venture, compounded with thirty years of interest. Under the terms of the original trust, that equity can only be claimed by a legitimate male Calloway heir upon birth."

Arthur took a shallow, painful breath. In the background, the sound of a church bell chimed faintly—a European chime, echoing across water.

"Your father is dying, Ethan," Arthur whispered. "For real this time. He is in a clinic in Montreux. And he has given Grace and you forty-eight hours to bring Julian to him. If you do not... the entire ledger of how Declan’s father built his fortune will be released to the Department of Justice."

The line went dead.
