Chapter 30 - The Sealed Envelope

The transatlantic flight back to New York was peaceful in a way neither Grace nor Ethan had experienced in years.
High above the Atlantic, baby Julian slept in the custom bassinet secured beside Grace’s seat. Ethan sat across the aisle, working quietly on his laptop, reviewing the transitional filings that officially transferred the Swiss trust into Grace’s sole maternal stewardship.
Grace watched him. The arrogance that had defined the man she married was entirely gone. In its place was a quiet, steady resolve—a man who had faced the darkest corners of his past and chosen his son’s peace over his own vindication.
"Ethan," Grace called out softly.
Ethan looked up immediately, closing the laptop screen. "Yes, Grace? Do you need something? Water? Formula?"
"Come sit here," she said, gesturing to the leather seat beside her.
Ethan hesitated for a brief second, then unbuckled his belt and moved across the aisle, sitting down beside her. For the first time in months, there was no invisible wall of ice between them.
"You gave up eighty-five million dollars of personal leverage today," Grace said, her eyes searching his face. "You could have demanded your old title back. You could have asked for a share in the company. You asked for nothing."
"I don't need a title to be Julian's father," Ethan said, looking down at his sleeping son. "And I don't need a company to prove to you that I've changed. If all I ever get is the right to pick him up from school and teach him how to ride a bike... that will be more than I deserve."
Grace didn't speak for a long moment. She reached out, her fingers gently covering his hand resting on the armrest. Ethan stiffened in surprise, then slowly, carefully turned his palm upward, letting their fingers interlock.
"We aren't who we were, Ethan," Grace whispered. "I won't pretend the last year didn't happen. The scars are still there."
"I know," Ethan murmured. "I'll spend the rest of my life respecting them."
"Good," Grace said softly, a small, genuine warmth returning to her eyes. "Because Julian is going to need his father. And maybe... his mother isn't ready to close that door completely either."
A quiet, profound peace settled over them as the jet began its descent toward New York.
An hour later, their convoy arrived outside the Manhattan townhouse. Arthur Vance’s courier, who had arrived on an earlier flight, was waiting by the front steps. He handed Ethan a single, sealed black envelope.
"From Marcus's personal safe in Montreux, Mr. Calloway," the courier said respectfully before departing into the evening drizzle. "It was marked to be delivered only after you crossed back into American airspace."
Ethan frowned, turning the heavy wax-sealed envelope in his hands.
Grace carried Julian inside, while Ethan stood under the foyer light, breaking the seal. Inside was a single folded sheet of aged parchment, written in his father’s sharp hand, dated three weeks before Julian’s birth.
Ethan unfolded it and began to read:
*'Ethan,*
*If you are reading this, it means you chose Grace over vengeance. It means you proved to be a better man than I was. But you must understand why Richard Pierce targeted me in 1994.*
*It was not about greed, my son. Richard Pierce did not manufacture those margin calls to steal my firm. He did it to bury a secret we both uncovered.*
*Julian is not the first child born of the Calloway and Pierce lineage.*
*Before your mother and I married, Richard Pierce had a daughter. A daughter who was given up for adoption in Boston under the name of a private trust.*
*Her name was never recorded in the Pierce family registry.*
*Find her, Ethan. Before Declan does. Because under Massachusetts inheritance law, she owns forty percent of Pierce Capital—and she has no idea who she is.'*
Ethan’s heart stopped.
He stared at the parchment, his hands going completely cold. From the nursery down the hall, he heard Grace’s soft voice humming a lullaby to Julian.
May you like
Ethan slowly turned the letter over.
Penciled on the back was a single name and a New York address—an address that was currently listed as the primary legal residence of Grace’s own estranged elder sister.
