Chapter 30 - The Unfinished Horizon

Three days later, the grand Tahoe villa welcomed us back with absolute, unbroken peace. The automated security dome pulsed a steady, peaceful blue against the backdrop of the pine trees, and the crisp mountain air carried the familiar scent of pine and damp lake water.
I walked into my study, stripped off my tactical vest, and placed it inside the wall safe. My civilian clothes—a clean black turtleneck and dark jeans—hung neatly in the closet, waiting patiently.
Ethan walked into the study carrying two steaming mugs of black coffee, handing one to me before walking over to the floor-to-ceiling windows to look out across the mirror-like surface of Lake Tahoe.
“Well, Commander,” Ethan said softly, taking a sip of his coffee. “The tribunal opened this morning, Julian Vance’s assets are fully liquidated, and the federal prosecutor’s office confirmed your father is safely back at his desk in the municipal zoning office.”
I walked over to join him by the glass, resting my hand against the cool, solid frame of the window. The water was calm, reflecting the brilliant blue sky and the quiet majesty of the surrounding peaks. No threatening phone calls. No forged signatures. No midnight ambushes in rail yards or desert silos.
My phone rested silently on the corner of the desk. No frantic messages, no encrypted warnings, no ghosts from the past. Just the quiet, reassuring hum of the automated security dome pulsing its steady blue light above the entryway.
“It’s really over, isn't it?” I murmured, watching the sunlight dance across the sparkling expanse of the water.

Ethan smiled warmly, raising his coffee mug in a quiet toast. “It’s over, Avery. The watch is truly finished.”
I smiled back, taking a slow, appreciative sip of my coffee as I looked out at the endless horizon where the blue lake met the infinite sky.
