Chapter 73 - Smoke and Mirrors

The emergency service tunnel was a labyrinth of rust-stained concrete walls, dripping condensation pipes, and flickering fluorescent lights that buzzed with an irritating, high-pitched whine. Ethan scrambled to his feet first, clutching his hardened military laptop under one arm like a football while frantically tapping at his wrist-mounted tactical display.
"The main data packet is successfully routed and bouncing through three offshore proxy nodes in Zurich and Reykjavik," Ethan panted, wiping a streak of soot from his forehead as we jogged down the dim corridor. "As far as the global financial networks are concerned, the Iron Veil's entire operational capital just vanished into thin air. But I guarantee you, Vance and the directors are already mobilizing every asset they have left to hunt us down."
"Where is Elena?" I asked, checking my remaining magazine count as we approached a junction ladder leading upward toward the surface.
"She’s waiting for us at the secondary extraction point three blocks north of the research campus," Ethan replied, checking his GPS tracker. "She managed to hotwire an unmarked medical van to slip past the initial police roadblocks. But we need to move fast—the local Swiss authorities just dispatched a heavily armed tactical response unit to secure the Helix BioCorp perimeter."
We reached the base of the vertical ladder and began climbing hand over hand, the cold metal rungs biting into our tactical gloves. The air grew progressively warmer as we ascended toward the surface street level, trading the subterranean gloom for the crisp, freezing night air of Geneva.
I pushed open the heavy iron manhole cover a fraction of an inch, peering out into the darkened alleyway. The street was quiet, illuminated only by the amber glow of old-fashioned streetlamps and the distant, flashing blue and red lights of police cruisers converging on the main entrance of the Helix BioCorp campus a quarter-mile away.
"Coast looks clear," I whispered, lifting the manhole cover entirely and pulling myself up onto the asphalt, offering a hand down to haul Ethan up behind me.
We slipped out of the alleyway like shadows, keeping close to the brick walls of the old European storefronts. The sharp autumn wind whipped down from the snow-capped Alpine peaks, biting through our tactical gear as we made our way through the winding, cobblestone alleys of the historic district.
Ten minutes later, we slipped into the side door of a nondescript, white commercial van parked in the deep shadows of a loading dock. Elena was sitting in the driver's seat, her eyes locked on the rearview mirror, her fingers drumming a restless rhythm against the steering wheel. As soon as the sliding side door slammed shut, she jammed her foot down on the gas pedal, pulling away from the curb without turning on her headlights until we rounded the corner.
"Nice fireworks show back there, boys," Elena glanced back at us over her shoulder, a tight, approving smile playing on her lips. "The entire Swiss federal police force is swarming the Helix campus right now. Rumor has it their entire quantum server infrastructure just suffered a cataclysmic thermal meltdown."
"Call it an unscheduled system reboot," Ethan grinned, collapsing into the passenger seat and opening his laptop to verify the data transfer integrity. "The Iron Veil's financial network is officially dead in the water. But that means they’re going to be looking for a scapegoat very, very soon."

"Which brings us back to Director Arthur Vance," I said darkly, pulling off my tactical helmet and running a hand through my sweat-drenched hair as I settled onto the metal bench in the back of the van. "Vance didn't just give us this assignment out of the goodness of his heart. He used us as a wrecking ball to dismantle a rogue faction within his own intelligence apparatus."
"Of course he did," Elena nodded, steering the van smoothly onto the highway heading toward the French border. "Vance has been playing a multi-dimensional chess game for the last twenty years. The question is, Commander... what does he plan to do with us now that the board has been cleared?"
