Chapter 46 - The Server Farm

The room was vast, freezing cold, and dominated by rows of massive, humming server racks bathed in an eerie blue LED glow. Piles of physical paper ledgers, encrypted hard drives, and classified dossiers sat stacked on metal sorting tables near the center of the room.

And strapped to a metal chair near the primary diagnostic console was a man in a rumpled civilian suit—bloodied at the lip, pale, but breathing steadily.

Marcus Vance.

As we rushed into the room, Marcus raised his head, blinking against the bright blue light of the servers. “You... you actually made it.”

“Keep your voice down,” I said, holstering my sidearm as I rushed over to untie the heavy nylon zip-ties binding his wrists to the chair. “Where are the encryption keys?”

“In the primary mainframe console,” Marcus gasped, rubbing his bruised wrists as he stood up unsteadily. “The Meridian Group’s lead director was just here fifteen minutes ago. They’re purging the physical hard drives into a secondary remote satellite relay as we speak. If that upload finishes, they’ll have complete offshore backup of every corrupted financial record in Washington.”

Ethan was already at the central terminal, his fingers flying across the mechanical keyboard like lightning. “Damn it! The upload protocol is encrypted with a rolling military cipher. I can’t break it remotely.”

“Use the master key,” Marcus said, tossing a small, titanium-cased secure drive onto the console. “My personal decryption key. It’s the only thing that can force a hard-stop on the upload loop.”

Ethan grabbed the drive, slammed it into the terminal’s primary USB port, and hammered the execution key.

For three agonizing seconds, the room’s blue lighting flickered violently, shifting to a harsh, blinking amber.

WARNING: UNAUTHORIZED OVERRIDE DETECTED. INITIATING EMERGENCY DATA WIPE.

“It’s working!” Ethan shouted, a fierce grin breaking across his face. “The upload is locked! The servers are purging themselves!”

Suddenly, the heavy steel security doors at the far end of the server room blew inward with a deafening concussive blast.

Smoke billowed into the room as a dozen heavily armed Meridian Group operatives rushed through the breach, their assault rifles raised and firing instantly.

“Take cover!” I yelled, shoving Marcus behind a heavy server rack as a wall of lead chewed up the metal casing above our heads.
