Chapter 39 - The Final Stand

Two more mercenaries flanked the central pillar, spraying a wall of suppressive fire across our position that forced me to hug the floor as bullet fragments chipped away at the concrete beside my head.

I rolled to the left, using the momentary break in their cadence to shoulder my carbine, and caught the lead attacker square in the shoulder plate, spinning him into the path of Sterling’s crossfire.

The remaining two operatives hesitated for a split second, realizing their tactical advantage had evaporated. That split second was all we needed.

Sterling stood up from his cover, stepping out into the open with his sidearm leveled at chest height, and fired two precise rounds that ended the firefight with cold, absolute finality.

Silence rushed back into the cavern, broken only by the steady, rhythmic hum of the supercomputer array and the heavy, ragged breathing of our small team.

I stood up slowly, keeping my carbine raised as I walked over to check the console.

The digital progress bar on the main screen was flashing a brilliant, uninterrupted green.

PROGRESS: 98%... 99%... 100%.

CORE DECOMMISSIONING COMPLETE. ALL ARCHITECTURAL NODES PERMANENTLY ERASED.

The massive ring-shaped supercomputer array surrounding us gave one final, muffled mechanical shudder, its pulsing blue lights fading slowly into total darkness. The air in the bunker grew instantly cool and still as the massive cooling fans wound down to a complete stop.

Ethan slumped back against the console, letting out a long, shuddering laugh that bordered on hysterical. “We did it. God help us, we actually did it. The Aegis Protocol is gone.”

Sterling walked over to the terminal, pulling the empty flash-drive slot open and staring at the dark screen. For the first time since I met him, the general’s face looked genuinely relaxed—as if a ghost he’d been carrying on his back for twenty years had finally been laid to rest.

“It’s over, Captain,” Sterling said quietly, holstering his weapon. “The machine is dead.”
