Chapter 85 - Jungle Rain and Lead

The jungle canopy swallowed us the moment our boots hit the thick, muddy soil of the Paraguayan wilderness. The tropical rain fell in sheets, turning the forest floor into a treacherous mire of red clay and decaying roots, but it also acted as a natural cloak, completely masking our thermal signatures and dampening our approach toward the Iron Veil’s hidden compound.
We moved in single file, spacing ourselves fifteen yards apart, weapons raised and scanning the dense undergrowth through our night-vision and thermal HUD overlays. The perimeter fence loomed out of the darkness—a towering chain-link barrier topped with triple coils of razor wire and blinking infrared motion sensors.
"Sensors are active," Ethan whispered into our comms, crouching low beside a massive banyan tree while tapping furiously on his ruggedized tablet. "They’re running a continuous microwave pulse sweep. If I try to cut the power grid directly, an automated backup generator will trip the base alarm in under three seconds."
"Don't cut it," I replied, checking the magazine in my carbine as water dripped steadily from the brim of my tactical helmet. "Blind it."
Ethan smiled faintly, pulling a specialized signal emitter from his pack and connecting it directly to a buried communication junction box near the fence post. "Injecting a cascading feedback loop into their local relay node... now."
Along the perimeter fence, the blinking red infrared beams instantly froze, looping a prerecorded diagnostic feed of an empty rain-swept clearing while our physical bodies remained completely invisible to their monitoring systems.
"In," Ethan hissed.
I holstered my weapon for a fraction of a second, grabbing the top of the fence and vaulting cleanly over the razor wire, landing softly in the mud on the other side. Elena and Ethan followed close behind, their boots making barely a sound against the wet grass as we slipped into the shadows of the compound's outer maintenance yard.
The facility itself was a massive, concrete brutalist structure built during the Cold War—windowless, heavily reinforced, and humming with the deep bass vibration of diesel generators. Through the reinforced glass of a ground-floor loading bay, we could see armed guards patrolling the interior corridors, their rifles slung across their chests as they drank coffee and traded whispered conversations in Spanish and English.

"Vance is inside the central communications bunker on the sub-basement level," Ethan whispered, checking his tactical map. "He’s actively attempting to establish a satellite link with rogue financial nodes in Zurich and Singapore. If he transmits those master keys, the Iron Veil rises from the dead."
"Not on my watch," I said, raising my carbine and signaling toward the heavy steel access door leading down into the concrete bunker. "Let's go cage the director."
