Chapter 64 - An Unwelcome Reunion

The diner bell chimed again as the man in the grey suit stepped inside. He stood near the entrance for a brief moment, his sharp, calculating eyes scanning the room before locking directly onto my booth by the window. He didn't look like a local Midwesterner; his posture was too rigid, his stride too precise, his gaze too accustomed to reading angles of attack and exit lanes.
He walked down the narrow aisle between the red vinyl booths, stopping just outside my table. He was carrying a slim leather briefcase in his left hand, his right hand resting casually inside his jacket pocket.
“Do you mind if I join you, Commander?” he asked smoothly, his voice low and cultured, carrying the faint, unmistakable cadence of a high-level government attaché.
I didn't invite him to sit, but I didn't reach for my coffee either. My muscles tensed, ready to spring across the table if things went south. “You’ve got the wrong guy, friend. My name is Marcus.”
“Marcus is a fine name,” the man replied, slipping into the opposite side of the booth without waiting for permission. He placed his briefcase neatly on the laminate table, resting his hands folded over the clasp. “And Commander is a title earned through blood, sweat, and a remarkable propensity for tearing down multi-billion-dollar shadow syndicates. Let’s dispense with the alias games. My name is Director Arthur Vance, Federal Oversight Directorate.”
The last name hit me like a cold splash of water. “Vance? As in Marcus Vance—the federal handler who helped us secure the Sovereign Dawn?”
“Marcus is my younger, far more idealistic brother,” Arthur corrected, offering a thin, humorless smile that didn't reach his eyes. “He believes the world can be saved by handing over encrypted microchips to international tribunals and trusting the bureaucracy to sweep up the mess. I operate in the real world, Commander. And right now, the real world has a vacuum problem.”

I stared at him across the table, my grip tightening around my coffee mug. “The Meridian Group is gone. Krovos is in a black site. The ledger is burned. There is no vacuum.”
“Nature abhors a void, Commander,” Arthur said softly, leaning forward over the table. “And when you burn down a global shadow empire in three weeks, you don't just eliminate a threat—you invite every ambitious, second-tier warlord, rogue intelligence faction, and corrupt corporate conglomerate to step into the ashes and pick up the crown.”
