Chapter 89 - The Flight Home

The private Gulfstream jet cut through the starry night sky over the Atlantic Ocean, cruising smoothly at forty thousand feet as it made its long journey back toward North America. The cabin was quiet, bathed in a soft, ambient blue light that offered a peaceful contrast to the brutal chaos of the Paraguayan jungle we had left behind less than twenty-four hours ago.

I sat in the leather seat by the window, nursing a cup of black coffee while watching the endless expanse of dark ocean stretch out beneath the wings. The heavy, grinding tension that had gripped my chest for weeks had finally dissolved, replaced by a profound, unshakeable sense of closure.

Ethan was fast asleep across the aisle, his laptop resting securely on his lap with the screen powered down, while Elena kept watch in the cockpit jump seat, maintaining a secure, encrypted link with our international handlers.

Vance was locked away in a high-security transport flight heading toward Europe, his network dismantled, his ambitions buried beneath the weight of federal indictments and international war crimes tribunals. The board was empty. The pieces had been swept away.

And for the first time in my adult life, I wasn't an operative looking for the next mission. I was just a son returning home.

My thoughts drifted back to the brick colonial house in Indiana—the golden autumn leaves drifting across the lawn, the quiet creak of my father's wooden rocking chair, and the endless, petty neighborhood turf wars over property lines and municipal zoning permits. It wasn't a glamorous life, and it certainly didn't come with classified security clearances or high-tech tactical gear. But it was real. And it was mine to protect.

The pilot's voice crackled gently through the cabin intercom. "Commander, we're thirty minutes out from Indianapolis International. Initiating our final descent."

I set my coffee cup down on the tray table, reached into my tactical jacket pocket, and pulled out my burner phone. With a steady, deliberate motion, I popped out the SIM card, snapped it cleanly in half between my fingers, and dropped the pieces into the empty coffee cup.

No more frequencies. No more secure comms. No more calls to answer.
