Chapter 87 - The Final Protocol

Director Arthur Vance didn't raise his hands. Instead, a slow, dark smile crept across his weathered face—a smile that sent an immediate, icy spike of alarm straight down my spine.

"You think capturing me in some godforsaken jungle bunker changes anything, Marcus?" Vance laughed softly, stepping away from the desk and raising his palms slowly, deliberately away from his body. "The Iron Veil isn't a man. It’s an idea. It’s an inevitable evolution of global governance. And the master keys are already uploading to an automated, decentralized blockchain node that no bullet can kill."

"Ethan, check the uplink!" I barked into my comms, keeping my sights locked on Vance's chest.

"I'm on it, I'm on it!" Ethan yelled from the doorway, his fingers hammering away at his portable deck with blinding velocity. "Damn it! Vance has a hardware dead-man switch slaved to his encrypted satellite transmitter. The upload is already at ninety-two percent!"

"Stop him, Commander!" Elena shouted, raising her weapon as heavy footsteps echoed from the main corridor outside the vault. "We've got company! Reinforcements are swarming the hallway!"

A burst of automatic gunfire chewed into the concrete doorframe beside my head, sending white-hot sparks and choking dust raining down into my eyes. I pivoted instantly, leaning out from cover and squeezing the trigger in a controlled, lethal burst that dropped the first two cartel enforcers attempting to storm the room.

"Ethan! The switch!" I roared over the deafening cacophony of gunfire echoing through the narrow corridor.

"I'm bypassing their firewall now! Give me ten seconds!" Ethan shouted back, sweat pouring down his forehead as lines of cascading red code scrolled furiously across his screen.

Vance stood across the room, watching the progress bar tick upward with a triumphant gleam in his eyes. Ninety-five percent. Ninety-eight percent.

I didn't hesitate. I ignored the gunfire erupting from the hallway, ignored the shouting guards, and took two rapid strides forward, slamming the butt of my carbine hard across the master console housing Vance's satellite transmitter.

The heavy plastic casing shattered into a million jagged pieces, internal circuit boards smoking and sparking violently as the screen went pitch black.

100% Upload Interrupted. Connection Terminated.

The silence that followed was absolute, broken only by the hum of dying computer fans and the steady drip of tropical rain outside the bunker walls.

Vance stared at the smoking console in absolute, stunned disbelief, his legs finally giving out beneath him as he slumped back down into his metal chair, defeated.
