Chapter 36 - The Subterranean Vault

The interior of Project Ironwood smelled of cold concrete, ozone, and old hydraulic fluid. We moved single-file down a massive, sloping concrete vehicle tunnel that plunged deep into the heart of the granite mountain, our tactical flashlights cutting sharp beams through the swirling dust.
After descending nearly four hundred feet, the tunnel opened up into a cavernous underground chamber the size of an airplane hangar. In the center of the room sat the main processing hub—a massive, ring-shaped supercomputer array glowing with a faint, pulsing amber light.
“There it is,” Ethan breathed, staring at the colossal machine with a mixture of professional awe and absolute dread. “The Chimera core node. It’s even bigger than the one at Lake Tahoe.”
“It’s the primary mother-node,” Sterling corrected, walking briskly toward the central control console positioned at the base of the supercomputer array. “Every regional sub-station feeds its data telemetry directly into this architecture. If we don't inject the cryptographic purge key into the primary mainframe right now, the system will begin its global lockout sequence within thirty minutes.”
I scanned the perimeter of the cavern, my tactical instincts prickling with unease. The vast room was entirely too quiet. The massive cooling fans mounted along the ceiling were spinning at half-speed, emitting a low, rhythmic drone that vibrated in my chest.
“Ethan, check the local network logs,” I ordered sharply, keeping my carbine raised as I patrolled the edge of the control deck. “Something feels off. This place is too clean.”
Ethan hurried over to a secondary terminal, his fingers flying across the console. “I’m pulling the local system diagnostics now... Wait. That’s impossible.”
“Talk to me, Ethan,” I said, stepping closer.
“The facility hasn't been dormant,” Ethan said, his voice tightening with panic as green lines of data flooded his screen. “The telemetry logs show active remote access connections originating from a secure satellite relay in Zurich less than forty-eight hours ago. Someone’s been using this facility as a live proxy server while we were sitting in Lake Tahoe.”
Before Ethan could finish his sentence, the dull, pulsing amber light surrounding the supercomputer array instantly flared into a blinding, solid crimson.
