Chapter 53 - The Rostova Protocol

I rushed forward, slicing through the heavy industrial zip-ties binding Elena’s wrists with my combat knife while Ethan scanned the perimeter windows for spotters.
"Easy, Elena. You're safe," I said, catching her as she slumped forward from hours of exhaustion and restraint.
She winced, gripping my forearm with surprising strength. "I'm not safe, Commander. And neither are you. The Meridian Group wasn't just a corporate shadow syndicate. They were a front for something far older and far more entrenched."
Ethan lowered his tactical scanner, frowning. "What are you talking about? We wiped the core servers on the Sovereign Dawn. Every financial record, every operative directory, every shell company—gone."
"The servers on the ship were just the public ledger," Elena whispered, coughing slightly as I handed her a flask of clean water. "The operational command structure—the Directorate of the Black Vanguard—operated independently of the digital network. When you destroyed the servers, you didn't kill the syndicate. You just blinded them, and a wounded animal lashes out indiscriminately."
"Who leads them now?" I demanded, feeling the familiar, cold surge of adrenaline sharpen my senses.
"General Viktor Krovos," Elena said, her voice dropping to a terrified shudder. "A man everyone thought perished in the Balkan conflicts twenty years ago. He’s taken control of the surviving sleeper cells across Eastern Europe. And he’s rebuilding the network using stolen military launch codes."
Before I could answer, the comms headset in my ear crackled to life with a harsh, static-laced burst. It was our automated satellite relay back at the Lake Tahoe safehouse, routing an emergency ping.

"Commander, this is local telemetry," an automated security voice echoed through our earpieces, overlaid with the unmistakable sound of automated alarms blaring in the background. "Perimeter breach detected at the Tahoe safehouse. Multiple unknown hostiles bypassing the outer defense grid."
My blood ran ice cold. They didn't just track us to Vienna—while we were chasing a ghost in Europe, a strike team had hit our home.
