Chapter 70 - Into the Lion's Den

Midnight descended over Geneva like a heavy velvet cloak, blanketing the Helix BioCorp research campus in silence. The sprawling glass and steel complex gleamed under the pale, cold light of a half-moon, surrounded by razor-wire fences and high-tech security cameras sweeping their crimson beams across the manicured lawns.

Dressed in matte-black tactical gear, my carbine slung securely across my chest and my suppressors locked in place, I dropped silently from the overhead maintenance gantry into the sprawling concrete service courtyard behind the primary research building. Ethan dropped down beside me with soft, calculated precision, his mobile terminal humming with active decryption subroutines.

“We are inside the perimeter,” Ethan whispered into our encrypted comms channel, his tactical HUD glowing a faint, eerie blue in the dark. “Local fiber-optic trunk line is tapped. I’m injecting a spoofed maintenance signal into their security grid right... now.”

Along the perimeter wall, the synchronized red sweep of the security cameras abruptly froze, looping a ten-second prerecorded feed of empty asphalt while our physical bodies remained completely invisible to their automated sensors.

“Nice work, Ethan,” I murmured, signaling toward the heavy steel maintenance hatch set into the foundation wall. “Open the door.”

Ethan plugged a compact hardware bypass tool into the electronic keypad lock. A soft green light flashed, followed by a quiet pneumatic click as the heavy steel bolts retracted into the frame. The hatch swung inward, revealing a dark, cool industrial corridor stretching deep beneath the earth.

“Sub-Level Two is just past the secondary junction,” Elena’s voice whispered through our earpieces from her observation post across the valley. “Be advised, Commander—heat signatures show three patrol guards moving down your corridor right now. Move fast, and stay in the shadows.”

I gripped my carbine tighter, checking the chamber with a quiet, practiced motion. The past was behind us, the future was unwritten, and the mission had officially begun. I stepped forward into the dark corridor, a ghost moving through the machine, ready to finish what we started.
