Chapter 88 - Code Zero

The gunfire in the hallway died down as Elena and Ethan systematically locked down the reinforced bulkheads, cutting off the remaining cartel enforcers outside the bunker. The heavy steel door sealed shut with a pneumatic hiss, trapping us safely inside the subterranean vault while the storm raged on outside the jungle walls.
I walked slowly across the room, stopping directly in front of Arthur Vance’s desk. I lowered my carbine, resting the barrel against the floor, and looked down at the man who had manipulated nations, betrayed his country, and dragged me back into the shadows of the board.
"It's over, Arthur," I said quietly. "No backup servers. No offshore accounts. No global financial control grid. You're done."
Vance looked up slowly, his eyes devoid of their former arrogance, replaced by the hollow, weary realization of a man who had lost everything for a throne built on sand. He didn't speak. He didn't try to negotiate. He simply closed his eyes and let out a long, defeated sigh.
"Secure him," I instructed Elena, stepping back from the desk. "We’re handing him over to Interpol’s international task force waiting at the extraction point. Let's see how well his shadow command structure operates from a maximum-security prison cell in The Hague."
"Gladly," Elena smiled darkly, stepping forward with a pair of heavy tactical zip-ties and hauling Vance roughly out of his chair.
As they led the former director out of the bunker, Ethan walked over to the main console, pulling a small thumb drive from his pocket and slotting it into the smoking remains of Vance's server.
"What are you pulling?" I asked, watching the data transfer complete.
"Just a complete archival scrub," Ethan grinned, unplugging the drive and slipping it into his vest pocket. "Every last vestige of the Iron Veil's infrastructure is now securely encrypted and locked away in a digital vault that only we possess. As far as the world is concerned, the threat is permanently neutralized."
"Good," I said, turning toward the heavy steel exit. "Because I have a flight to catch back to Indiana."
May you like
"Seriously?" Ethan raised an eyebrow, following me out into the corridor. "We just dismantled a global syndicate in the middle of the Paraguayan jungle, and you're thinking about your father's gazebo?"
"Especially the gazebo," I replied with a faint smile. "Henderson's probably trying to add a second story while I'm gone."
