Chapter 65 - The Director's Proposal

The diner hummed with the quiet clatter of silverware and distant chatter, completely oblivious to the conversation happening in our corner booth. I took a slow sip of my coffee, keeping my eyes locked on Arthur Vance’s cold, calculating expression.

“If you're here to draft me back into the service, you can turn around and walk right back out that door,” I said flatly, my voice cold and unyielding. “I handed in my credentials. I served my time. I’m retired.”

Arthur didn't flinch. He simply popped open the brass latches of his leather briefcase and slid a single manila folder across the laminate table. The cover was stamped with a stark red classification mark: RESTRICTED - DIRECTORS EYES ONLY.

“Nobody ever truly retires from this life, Commander,” Arthur said quietly. “You can trade your carbine for a civilian SUV, and you can plant tomatoes in Indiana, but the digital footprint you left behind during your assault on the Sovereign Dawn and the Tahoe safehouse is currently being decoded by a terrifyingly competent new syndicate calling themselves the Iron Veil.”

I glanced down at the folder, reluctant to touch it, yet my instincts forced my eyes to scan the exposed corner of the top document. Grainy satellite photographs showed a heavily fortified compound hidden deep within the rugged mountains of the Caucasus, surrounded by radar arrays and anti-aircraft batteries.

“The Iron Veil?” I asked, narrowing my eyes.

“A conglomerate of former Meridian division heads, rogue cyber-warfare specialists, and privatized military contractors who didn't go down with Krovos,” Arthur explained, his tone dropping into a serious, urgent register. “They’ve spent the last six months reverse-engineering the fragments of our old NATO relay network. They aren't trying to build a shadow corporation anymore. They are building an autonomous, AI-driven global financial control grid. Within forty-eight hours, they will have the capability to lock down sovereign banking systems worldwide.”

“Then deploy the military,” I retorted sharply. “Send in a federal strike team, use orbital drones, or let your brother handle it with the international tribunal.”

“We can't,” Arthur said grimly. “Because the Iron Veil has embedded their primary server node inside a civilian population center—a heavily guarded mega-facility disguised as a tech research campus in downtown Geneva, Switzerland. A direct military assault would trigger a civilian massacre of catastrophic proportions. We need an infiltration specialist. We need a ghost who can get inside without firing a single shot, extract their primary decryption core, and disappear before they even realize their firewall has been breached.”

I sat back in the vinyl booth, staring out the diner window at the peaceful, sunlit streets of Maple Grove. The contrast between the quiet Midwestern morning and the terrifying global threat resting inside Arthur’s folder was staggering.
