Chapter 14 - The Price of Blood

The cold, metallic click of the front gates swinging open echoed through the estate’s intercom system like a death knell. Upstairs, in the armored Suburban idling on the circular drive, Marcus slammed his fist against the steering wheel as he saw the federal prosecutor step onto the front porch, flanked by heavily armed state troopers.

"Boss is taking too long," Marcus muttered, his face beaded with fresh sweat as his wound throbbed beneath his tactical vest. He looked back at the kids in the rear seat. "Ethan, listen to me very carefully. If I tell you to run, you take Lily through the lower treeline toward the old drainage creek. Do not look back. Do not stop for anyone. Do you understand?"

"I'm not leaving my dad," Ethan said, his voice dropping into that chillingly calm cadence that mirrored Daniel's. The boy reached down to the floorboard, lifting Marcus’s dropped 9mm pistol—a weapon he had practiced stripping and reassembling since he was nine years old—and checked the slide with expert precision.

"Ethan, put that down right now," Lily gasped, her eyes wide with terror as she clutched her battered leather journal against her chest. "If the feds catch you with a firearm, they'll lock you away in a military black site and throw away the key!"

"They're already here to take me," Ethan replied, his young face set in stone. "Mom didn't just sell out the syndicate; she set me up as the fall guy for the corporate espionage charges so the federal government has a permanent leverage point over Dad. If I walk out there in handcuffs, Dad loses everything he's fought to protect."

Before Marcus could argue, the front doors of the mansion burst open.

Daniel emerged onto the grand portico, his grip locked firmly around Elena’s wrist, using her as a human shield as he stepped out into the blinding morning glare of the federal searchlights.

"Hold your fire!" the federal prosecutor shouted, stepping forward with his hands raised, holding the manila envelope like a shield. "Daniel Carter! Drop your weapon and release Mrs. Carter immediately. You are surrounded by federal jurisdiction, state police, and tactical units. There is no escape!"

"Save the speech, Arthur," Daniel yelled back, his voice cutting through the roar of idling engines like a razor blade. He pressed the cold steel of his combat knife against Elena's neck, just deep enough to draw a single, thin bead of crimson against her pale skin. "Tell your marshals to stand down, or the woman who funded your entire reelection campaign bleeds out on her own welcome mat."

The prosecutor—Arthur Vance, a high-ranking Department of Justice official whose career had been secretly financed by Elena’s offshore shell accounts—flinched visibly. His composure cracked for a split second as he looked at Elena, then back at Daniel.

"You're making a catastrophic mistake, Daniel," Arthur called out, his voice trembling slightly. "The indictment isn't just about corporate espionage or syndicate tax fraud anymore. It's high treason. The moment you cross that threshold, there's no deal, no sanctuary, no underworld council to save you."

"I don't need a council," Daniel snarled, tightening his grip. "I need my son."

"Your son is already part of the federal record, Carter!" a sharp, mechanized voice echoed from the secondary tactical van parked near the gate.

The side doors of the van slid open with a loud mechanical rattle. Two armed federal agents stepped down, dragging a figure between them—a figure whose hands were bound behind their back with heavy plastic zip-ties.

It wasn't Ethan.

It was Salvatore, the scarred senior capo who controlled the waterfront docks, bleeding heavily from a gunshot wound to the thigh, his face twisted in agony.

"They... they hit the warehouse, Boss," Salvatore wheezed, collapsing onto the gravel as the agents dropped him at the foot of the steps. "The whole... the whole council... it was a sweep. They knew every hideout, every code..."

Daniel’s eyes narrowed into slits. He looked down at Elena, who offered a cold, detached smile despite the knife pressed against her throat.

"Did you really think I'd leave loose ends at the warehouse, darling?" Elena whispered, her voice barely audible to anyone but him. "The council voted on your execution at midnight. I just made sure the federal government cast the deciding vote."
