Chapter 36 - The Siege of the Ridge

Before the audio echo could fully fade from the bunker's concrete walls, the seismic sensors embedded in the perimeter forest lit up in a blinding flash of crimson alarms.
"Incoming!" Marcus roared, spinning around and grabbing an assault rifle from the armory rack by the blast door. "We've got multiple heavy-transport signatures dropping infantry units two miles north of our position!"
On the external security monitors, thermal imaging cameras captured a dozen stealth-equipped tactical operatives fast-roping from heavy black helicopters directly into the snow-covered clearing above the bunker. They weren't corporate mercenaries or syndicate enforcers; they moved with the terrifying, synchronized precision of tier-one black-ops soldiers.
"They used the broadcast signal to trace our IP subnet!" Ethan yelled, frantically hammering keys to execute an emergency server wipe. "They're locking down the exterior ventilation shafts to pump in neurotoxin!"
Daniel didn't hesitate. He drew his sidearm, checking the magazine with cold, practiced efficiency before tossing a spare rifle to Marcus.
"They want the data back?" Daniel said, his voice laced with absolute, terrifying calm. "Then we'll give them a front-row seat to the explosion."
Elena stood up quickly from her chair, her eyes wide with sudden panic as she realized the shadow board wasn't here to rescue her—they were here to sanitize the entire site, leaving no witnesses behind, including her.
"They're going to level the entire ridge," Elena gasped, looking at Daniel with sudden, desperate realization. "They aren't taking prisoners, Daniel. If we stay here, we die in this concrete box."

Daniel looked down at her, a bitter, grim smile touching his lips. "Welcome to the real world, Elena. Hand me the master decryption key for the orbital relay, or you can die right here wondering what hit you."
With shaking hands, Elena reached into her jacket pocket, pulled out a small, encrypted titanium drive, and slammed it down onto the steel table. "Take it. Just don't let them win."
