Chapter 24 - The Grand Salon

Daniel didn't answer. He froze on the top landing of the stairwell, his rifle raised and sweeping the corners of the dimly lit corridor. The intercom speaker above his head hissed softly before falling dead silent once more.

"You're wasting your time, Elena," Daniel said into the empty air, his voice echoing with cold authority. "The bypass virus is already halfway through your firewall. By the time your automated relays try to lock us out, the entire Janus network will be wiped clean."

A soft, elegant chuckle drifted down the hallway from the shadows of the primary steward’s lounge.

"Is that what Ethan told you?" Elena stepped out from the darkness, walking slowly into the faint amber glow of the emergency pathway lights. She was dressed not in the mud-stained cashmere coat from the estate, but in a sleek, tailored midnight-blue evening gown that looked entirely out of place aboard a floating warship. Her posture was relaxed, her expression impossibly serene, as if she were greeting an old friend for evening cocktails rather than standing yards away from the man who had hunted her across continents. "My sweet boy always was a prodigy. But he's missing one fundamental truth about infrastructure, Daniel. You can't delete what's already decentralized."

Daniel kept his weapon locked on her chest, his finger resting lightly on the trigger. "Where are the data backups?"

"Buried across four different orbital nodes that you couldn't reach if you had a hundred years and a trillion dollars," Elena replied smoothly, taking another slow step forward, her eyes gleaming with dark amusement. "You always thought in terms of empires, Daniel. Capos, territories, cash, and muscle. That was your fatal flaw. You built a kingdom out of stone, and stone always crumbles when the ground shakes. I built a system out of data. And data is immortal."

"You destroyed our family for a system of numbers?" Daniel’s voice cracked slightly, the raw, twenty-year wound tearing open beneath the cold exterior. "You raised our son to be a soldier in a war you invented before he was even born."

Elena’s expression didn't flicker with empathy; if anything, her smile grew sharper, colder. "I gave him purpose, Daniel. I gave him a world where he doesn't have to bow to corrupt prosecutors, federal judges, or syndicate thugs. When this broadcast goes live at sunrise, every major intelligence agency on the planet will be paralyzed, and the new financial architecture will answer to one board. And I am the chairwoman."

Before Elena could finish her sentence, Daniel moved with blinding, explosive speed. He didn't fire; instead, he lunged forward, closing the distance between them in a split second, grabbing her by the shoulders, and slamming her hard against the reinforced mahogany paneling of the hallway, pinning her in place with the barrel of his rifle pressed tight against her throat.

Elena didn't scream. She didn't flinch. She simply looked up into his burning dark eyes, a thin, triumphant smile touching the corner of her lips.

"You're too late, darling," she whispered, her voice dripping with absolute confidence. "The upload finished three minutes ago."

At that exact second, the low, vibrating hum of the ship's server racks abruptly stopped.

The emergency pathway lights flickered violently, shifted from amber to a brilliant, pulsing crimson, and every digital screen throughout the yacht lit up with a single terrifying word: OVERRIDE.
